white crowned sparrow

Saw one at my feeder the other day, had to look him up, never saw one before. Are they BB killers too, or just the house sparrows? Never saw the BB again since that one sighting, Ted said I messed around too long before getting the worms out. All I did was get dressed and find a container to put the worms in, Geez.

None of the native sparrows are Bluebird killers. None are even cavity nesters. White-Crowned Sparrows are just lovely. Sorry you haven't seen your Bluebirds, but it is not because of a White-Crowned. Hopefully you'll see your Bluebirds soon.

Yep, Kendra is right about the sparrows. Oh and as far as taking too long to get the worms out, most Blues need to be trained to go to a feeder. They aren't normally feeder birds so they won't check out feeders looking for worms. You have to train them by putting a dish under where they normally perch, they will see the movement and drop down on it. Once they know you have worms in a dish for them however, then you can move the dish to where you want it.

Am fascinated by the beautiful Painted Bunting, so have been reading up on it. Most of you probably already knew these things, but will post what I have learned, just in case P B Facts: Member of Cardinal family. Bright colored with blue head, green back and red stomach is male. Drab colored green is female. Shy, difficult to see. Mostly monogmous. Sometimes hops along on ground. Seed eater. Oklahoma is one of its Summer breeding areas. At one time was a captured, caged bird, but now illegal. Is nearing endangered list, especially on East Coast due to losing habitat to industry and construction. The most colorful bird in America. Thanks to Dawn's and Gayle's suggestion, I am going to buy Millet seed to add to my feeders, as I want them to be repeat visitors, along with my many other bird visitors. As I have said before, my favorite gardening poem on "My Page" expresses how I feel about life. Jeanie

Howdy, konrad, janie and luc! WOW, long time indeed!!!! Konrad, I keep reading and hearing that about my shots, about them looking like paintings. Since I had to stop drawing due to the carpal tunnel, the camera has given me freer rein in getting what I see down better than any ink ever did . . . for me, that is. There's still a time or two when I will sit down to draw, and this summer I will be working on 'cartoonish' owls and the like for our church, but these will be larger than life :) Janie- it has been quite some time. . .and it is good to be back here. Joe in SW NH rekindled something in me that way when he was shooting photos everywhere he went while here visiting with me in October and part of November of 2000, and at one point during our visit, he let me use his camera to capture a couple of shots of Harlequin Ducks.
