what a season here so far. First I had a a woodpecker in the BB house with frantic BBs. I ran out and chased it away. Next it was HOSP in and out of the box. And then I looked out one day and a chickadee was peering inside of the box - good grief,what's going on here? After that the BB left for a week or so and then came back. It became clear they wanted that box and were laying eggs. Now yesterday we saw a terrible WREN in the box, one by one dropping the eggs out of the box. We saw it drop 3 before we really realized what was going on. I ran out and yelled like a mad woman at it. It stayed about 4 feet from me as I cradled the 3 broken eggs and growled at it. It didn't even

have the decency to fly away. There were 2 broken eggs left in the box which mama BB removed. The WREN hung around after that. I feel like maybe I should just take the box down. I usually take this particular box. I never get a 2nd brood from it because of the wrens. Your thoughts?

Sorry for all your troubles Susan. The Dees won't bother the Blues so I wouldn't worry about that. The hosps and wrens on the other hand are real problems. Hosps should be trapped and dispatched period! Hosps can be deterred with spookers and wrens with wren guards but not if the wren has already been in the box. He knows the hole is there. Have you been to the sialis website? All the info you need is there.

Susan,

Every year when the house wrens strike, and they do, I want to take down all the boxes. But I don't. This year I was able to find 4 of 5 chickadee newborns and put them back into the nest box. Then I put a wren guard on and the 4 will soon fledge.

I know it's hard to deal with them but think of all the wonderful things you'll see if you have boxes up. We just have to keep the rotten HOWRs in their place...somewhere else!

I have been having trouble posting images. It uploads fuzzy and if I hit submit before it clears (it has been remaining fuzzy) the post disappears. So I replanted this into a larger container with new soil, which I made sure was in the right pH range of 4.5 to 6. I loosened the roots and did not find any obvious rot. I am going to hope that the new soil and pot help whatever drainage issue that existed previously to go away, and I am hoping the plant can recover in a better environment.
