All of the sites I consulted said to make the nectar 4:1, water:sugar. I change/rinse the feeders every day. The plant that gets almost all of the attention from butterflies and hummers here is Lantana. There's a few around the yard, and 5 giant ones along the back fence, always covered with butterflies, visited constantly by the hummers too although they don't stay in any one place for more than a minute. It took me a few tries to get our feeders where I wanted them. Wherever it is, the hummers should find it. When I realized that, I put one just a few feet from the window we can see out of when sitting on the couch. Commercials aren't so boring now, just look out the window, the hummers are constantly visiting that feeder. There are no nectar plants on that side of the yard, or in the next 2 neighbors' yards. If you want to be 'selfish' about the placement, try it. For a few dollars in seeds, you can provide nectar with Basil, Zinnia, Coleus, without worrying about how they fit in the garden perennially, useful in any 'holes,' pots. I've also seen the hummers spending time repeatedly visiting Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender,' usually sold as a house plant (and easy to overwinter as one.) (Took this pic for the pots but the Lantana is the giant stuff on the left. You can't even see, there's a fence that goes through it.)

You will see Anna's throughout the year. An occasional Black-Chin beyond its "accepted" range. They appear to be a year-round resident as well, just kind of rare. Rufous will migrate through the area, especially toward the west end of the Sacramento Valley in the spring. I see a few in Downtown Sacramento, a lot more in Vacaville, but never see them in Roseville. Costas, Calliopes, and Allen's have wandered into the Sacramento Valley, but usually stay to the south or close to the Coast. The locals really like Lantana, Salvias (Waverly and S. leucantha for the cool season), Lobelia laxiflora, and just about any of the Cupheas. Cigar Plant Cuphea ignea Cuphea subuligera

Lovefornature-- I have two of the pp209 30oz glass feeders and I rarely fill them full . When you turn the feeder upside down the base fills and the glass level goes down. So when you see none or very little in the glass part the base is still full. The key for you should be the amount of useage and since you dont want to waste sugar water, if they are not using whats in the feeder in say 3 days, you should put less in. Only in past week have I been filling my big feeders full because they were draining them in a day when I only filled them half full, but that is changing now as migration is under way and many of my hummers have moved out and now there are just a few here, but I expect that to change from day to day as its not even august yet.

You might also want to post this question on the Florida Forum here at GardenWeb. There are several members who live in your area and might be able to give you very specific recommendations, although all the plants mentioned above will be great on the east coast of Florida. If you can plant something that will grow into a small shrub then try firebush (hamelia patens). The hummers here love it and visit daily during most of the year. Porterweed attracts them too, as do both colors of firespike (purple and red). Hummingbirds are tricky in Florida. They migrate through the state in early spring and late fall, but they don't stick around in large groups. You may have a couple pair throughout the summer but not dozens like most of us were used to seeing when we lived up north. Occassionally one or two birds will stay through the entire year but I haven't seen any since early November. They should start passing through again in early February, so your timing is good!
