Off to a semi good start

First nesting had 5 eggs all hatched 4 fledged one died in the nest went out that day and he was still warm, didn't see any parasites the nest looked good, cleaned it out and this was May 12th and MaMa built a new nest the 19th and this morning have another round of 5 eggs....oh and I also only see 2 babies coming to the patio with parents for mealworms so only 2 survived. Have to go out and get a new umbrella to attach to the nest box going to be a hot summer!!!

Second nesting have 5 eggs should be hatching any day now,
thought only 2 survived out of last 5 babies but this morning sitting on top of the bird house was daddy & 3 babies they're still enjoying dried mealworms so far not a bad summer with the blues.

Mike, you are right that the best time is fall. Then is the time to use broadleaf weed killer and after the proper time stated on the label, reseed. The problem with seeding in spring is that the soil is cold and then when the new grass does sprout, our weather heats up so high in the summer that the poor little things fry. In the fall, the soil is warm and the temperatures are cooling down. That is what grass likes. I see plantain, dandilions and I think, dead nettle (lamium) or it could be ground ivy. Spelling may be off. I would practice good lawn care like first getting a soil test. You can usually purchase kits from your county extension office. Fertilize in May and September. Mow high and never take off more than 1/3 of the length of your grass. Adjust the PH in fall, if it needs it. Be patient and don't expect a perfect lawn!

Mine is five years old and not half as bushy nor blooming as that. I plunked too many Clematis into holes chopped in clay with tree roots instead of carving out big holes using a barrier against the roots and back filling with compost. Those who were chopped in have struggled along barely alive and those who got great big holes or were in beds that were completely tilled and amended did great.

Ballplayer, Sure looks like you keep trying. I'm not sure what the problem is but I can tell you how I do mine. I usually start 500-600 seeds a year, FWIW. First, I get one of those plastic to-go trays with a lid from a restaurant. Drill small holes in the bottom of it. I like Ferti-lome Ultimate Potting Mix though every once in a while, I find a small piece of bark or a twig that needs to be remove. I add about 1.5" of this, then use a tweezers to place each seed individually, just barely in the mix. Cover that with a thin layer of potting mix, maybe 1/4". Set the entire thing in a tub of either rain water or aerated (for 24 hours or more) tap water. Let it sit until the mix is sopping wet. Remove it, put the lid on the tray and either place it on a heat mat set to 85 degrees or during summer, just on a bench. I do not water it again, at least not for a week or more. Usually within 3-5 days, the first seeds germinate. As soon as they do, I put them under CFL bulbs, as close as I can after removing the lid. When the mix is almost dry, I set the container back in the tub but usually add a very small amount or Tomato-tone fertilizer. This is lower in nitrogen but high in other ferts plants need to develop good roots. Put it back under the lights, then repeat as necessary. Once the seedlings develop at least one good set of leaves but usually two, I prepare nursery trays. Fill with potting mix, set in that tub of water and compact the mix, then refill and compact again. Let it sit, usually for an hour or more - however long it takes to throughly soak the mix. Remove it from the tub, set it aside for the evening. By the next day, excess moisture has drained off. Using my finger, I poke a hole in the mix. I gently remove the seedling (it helps to have that mix damp, but not wet) and place it in the hole until just the leaves are showing, then tamp the mix around it. When I finish a tray (6-36 plants) I put it under lights, again as close as I can. Then, I let the plants grow, watering them only when the mix gets dry (usually the plants will start to wilt a bit). Once the plants get 8-10" tall, I transplant them into 5-7 gallon pots. That's for my dirt plants. Next is the hydro ones. HTH, Mike

I had a similar problem with my kitchen sink a while ago. Started with a grease clog, I tried a plunger, baking soda and vinegar, and a chemical declogger. Nothing worked. I called my plumber. I think a house call is $100 minimum. He said the baking soda was jammed in the pipe. He had to cut a hole in the floor to get to it. Looks terrible, and I think the bill was around $200. Several months later the S-trap pipe underneath started to leak and that was another $300 or so. My guy is so expensive, but so good, and he always comes within hours of my phone call.

My blues were out on the patio bright and early looking for their mealworms and so I fed them and as I watched 4 babies and dad came to feed, so happy these past weeks I've only seen 2 babies so I thought the others didn't survive but I had 4 out of 5 make it....and now 5 more hatched yesterday. What a great summer if all of these babies make it that will be 9 new blues for our area.

That is so great! I can only hope to have my babies live and see them at the feeder. Is this the end of the season or is there a chance they will have another brood?

Also this morning this the first time I have seen the male at the regular seed bird feeders, wonder what he was getting there?

Great news deedee! My first nesing had six fledge and four survived and come to eat at the feeders. Mom and Dad are quite annoyed with them though as they are now feeding seven new nestlings! The nestlings are a week old today. I am hoping for a possible third nesting this season as this is the normal time frame for a first nesting around here and they are on their second already.

lorimcp...my male Blue used to eat peanut chips from my platform feeder...some will eat suet and or berries from seed mixes. I think some will even eat sunflower hearts. Or he could have seen a bug there too....

I believe they will have at least one more nesting at least thats how its been in the past, went out to the box this evening and snappped a photo because its hard to see how many hatched and in my pic only 4 of the 5 have hatched...I'll wait a couple of days and if the egg is still there I need to try to get it out but this momma builds her nests deep and its hard to even see the babies let alone try to reach in and remove an egg if anyone has some advice let me know. Also so glad to here that Donna and Lori are having a good yr. with blues I've been reading some horrible out come that others are not having good luck with there nestings.

deedee...no need to remove the unhatched egg. I have had several TRES eggs left in the nest over the years, once a bluebird egg and once a Dee egg. I never removed any and they never broke.
