Hi the blues love waxworms. I'm not sure they will feed them to babies but my blues always eat the waxworms first if they have a choice of waxworms or mealworms. The bad thing about the waxworms are that they are gross and they smell bad!

They will definitely feed the babies waxworms. In fact the first 3 days Blues won't feed the babies mws but during that time they will feed them waxworms.

Waxworms have a very high fat content and are easily digested. If the waxworms are kept in a corn meal +/- refrigeration they will live longer and not turn black, die and decay. They won't eat the corn meal but it keeps them cleaner and dry. No one will eat the dead black ones.

Waxworms need a temp of 50-55 degrees. Colder temps are not good for them. In the fridge you can usually find that in the door.

I fed my Blues waxworms last year and they actually would not take mealworms anymore, only the waxworms. Talk about being picky! Once I stopped offering waxworms they quit coming to the feeder even though it was full of mealworms. I ordered 1000 at a time from Sunshine and kept them in the fridge, I never had problems with smell or them dying on me.

Thanks for the info everyone - The pet store had "lots", but the one container I opened also had "lots" of dead ones, so I guess I'll have to be choosy. Can I assume that they will eat fewer waxworms because they are larger larva that mealworms?

I ordered wax worms from Reptile.com a few years ago when I had a single momma blue feeding 5 nestlings. They LOVED them! I ordered two containers at a time (ordered that twice) and lost very few but they don't last long, for sure. I doubt you can buy them through any of the on-line suppliers now because of the meal worm shortage but I've also picked them up at PetSmart and Petco a time or two. Theirs won't be a nice as the big on-line suppliers but maybe you can find a few good ones.
