What about waxworms?

Have any of you fed your Blues Waxworms? Do they like them? As of this morning, I'm completely out of mealies. I looked at waxworms yesterday at the pet store and they seemed way too big for Blues. And way more ickky for me, but I'm willing if someone can tell me a little more about them. Thanks!

Hi the blues love waxworms. I'm not sure they will feed them to babies but my blues always eat the waxworms first if they have a choice of waxworms or mealworms. The bad thing about the waxworms are that they are gross and they smell bad!

They will definitely feed the babies waxworms. In fact the first 3 days Blues won't feed the babies mws but during that time they will feed them waxworms.

I've grown Acalypha wilkesiana since I arived in Florida 25 years ago. They take full sun to 1/2 day shade. And yes, they can freeze back in tempatures that dip around 32 degrees. In south Florida, they can reach upwards of 15 foot. but here in St Pete, 6 foot is more like. I have several around my yard. My big red one - "Louisiana Red" stops traffic. The white one named "Java white" always gets an Wow! And don't forget about the chenille plant, it's in the same family, too. I think they're very easy to grow. If you can grow a hibiscus, you will not have any trouble growing one of these. I think I read they are deficient in calcium on the sialis site and they aren't to be given out in too much quantity. It was like 20 mealworms per bird per day. I think supplementing with waxworms would be good. I got the kit the other day, it was EASY to set up. I should have adult waxworms in about 60 days. There isn't much to do in the mean time, not like raising mealworms. YOu keep them sealed up just about until you harvest them for the birds. So the flying moths aren't an issue. From what I've read, the hatchling are so small that they could get out and invest your home, that's the real problem! So sealing up the culture is really important! The kit came with a rubber band thingy to seal the edges. I'm thinking I would need 6-8 cultures to have a consistent supple... They look like really fat white maggots, euw!! LOL! Last year I lost the male while four babies needed feeding. I did everything I could to help the female. I didn't know then to buy crickets...I'm just looking for options.

Molly, I had one runt fledge early (he was hatched about 40 hours after the first) and there was no way that short stub of a tail was going to get him up more than a few feet. I stayed in the yard with him ALL DAY (my kids are older, LOL) and had already added a one inch hole reducer to the nest box "just in case" he needed to go back into the box overnight. He did and although he AND his parents were not happy with me, I put him in and left him there till noon the next day. They were able to feed him through the once inch reducer but could not enter the box. It was miserable, me listening to him giving that lone cheep over and over again but I was worried about his odds of surviving overnight on the ground. He still didn't fly worth a flip the next day so another day was spent in the yard, watching him. By 5:00 that afternoon he'd made it to a bay window roof and from there to a dogwood tree. YEA! I have never been so glad to see a baby take off with his parents and the four siblings! Keeping my fingers crossed for your little runt and odds are very good that he remained "quietly" in a bush overnight in a bush or shrub.

I agree that this was originally from a nice gift shop type of place and probably held something as part of the gift. I think it is also relatively modern - as @linda campbell wrote, probably 1950's to 1970's. When I frequented flea markets, I would get pretty containers and use them to store whatever made sense. I don't think I would use it at this point to store unwrapped food but otherwise use it for cotton swabs or equivalent or wrapped candies on your desk at work. I use a tin miniature Tetley tea chest to store quarters

Waxworms have a very high fat content and are easily digested. If the waxworms are kept in a corn meal +/- refrigeration they will live longer and not turn black, die and decay. They won't eat the corn meal but it keeps them cleaner and dry. No one will eat the dead black ones.

Waxworms need a temp of 50-55 degrees. Colder temps are not good for them. In the fridge you can usually find that in the door.

I fed my Blues waxworms last year and they actually would not take mealworms anymore, only the waxworms. Talk about being picky! Once I stopped offering waxworms they quit coming to the feeder even though it was full of mealworms. I ordered 1000 at a time from Sunshine and kept them in the fridge, I never had problems with smell or them dying on me.

Thanks for the info everyone - The pet store had "lots", but the one container I opened also had "lots" of dead ones, so I guess I'll have to be choosy. Can I assume that they will eat fewer waxworms because they are larger larva that mealworms?

I ordered wax worms from Reptile.com a few years ago when I had a single momma blue feeding 5 nestlings. They LOVED them! I ordered two containers at a time (ordered that twice) and lost very few but they don't last long, for sure. I doubt you can buy them through any of the on-line suppliers now because of the meal worm shortage but I've also picked them up at PetSmart and Petco a time or two. Theirs won't be a nice as the big on-line suppliers but maybe you can find a few good ones.
