How did your tomatoes do this year?

Mine aren't blooming now, but I'm still picking every day. We only planted Early Girl this year and I thought they would be done and out of the ground by July 1. I'd like to get this kind of production out of Romas, but they don't like my garden at all.

My brother and I did pretty good with Tami G, Juliet, yellow pear and husky red cherry. The tomato and mozzarella salads were always being made.

We ended up with tomato leaf curl and a lot of my Beef masters cracked. I am new to Texas gardening so I blame myself for the cracking. My cherry's did well though. Planted new plants for the "fall" season in a different garden hoping to avoid the leaf curl, but I seem to have one plant that may be developing it. Also, on another plant I have found a leaf that is folded with some sort of webbing and a tiny ?? worm ?? inside. A. what the heck IS that? B. What would you suggest for these problems? Never dealt with this in NY. We were swarmed with Japanese beetles and we dealt with blight and early blight once or twice when I first started gardening, but I've never seen TLCV or some of the pesky insects that I have come across. Leaf footed bug, SWARMS of aphids, and the number of yellow jackets and wasps that seem to like my basil plants and peppers is overwhelming and I can't find their nests anywhere.

I have never started them early - I plant them directly in the ground after last frost date. In past years certain varieties have put out more flowers than I can keep up with - none did that this year. Isn't Long Island always a little cooler in summer because of ocean breezes? I've always assumed it's a gardener's dream location. And because dahlias seem to be happy in the NW (who isn't?), maybe LI is the next best thing. The humidity tends to hang in the air here (think Louisiana) but refuses to rain. The green parts of my plants appear healthy though, just few or no flowers. Baltimore Cty, isn't this later than normal for you? I'm sure you had some high temps this season.

Hi. I'm new here so I might not be doing this right. I just had to reply to this post because I've had SO many tomatoes this year. I just read an email from my hubby saying that he wouldn't mind if he never saw another tomato again. I had five plants and TONS of maters. I've frozen, canned, cooked and sandwiched. We made hot sauce, pasta sauce, chili base and just plain old canned tomatoes. I thought I'd have another month left but those ugly leaf beetle critters have taken over. They give me the creeps. I'm thinking about doing a fall garden but it would be a first for me. I don't know where to start. Insects would be the biggest problem. My husband planted collards one year and all I remember is worms all over them. I'd have to do a lot of reading to learn how to do a good green leafy vegetable garden. I hate not having anything growing. I LOVE gardening. It's rather depressing watching the stuff die.

I'm in Berkeley and it rarely has been over 70 degrees. Tumbling Tom has grown huge in spite of chewed half off by deer in May and I have gotten an occasional ripe cherry tomato off of it since 2 weeks ago. It must be setting less than 10% of its blossoms until recently. My Black Plums were also eaten half off by the same deer and they are just now turning yellow, but they seem to be setting a little higher percentage of the blossoms. These were both of my best producers last year. My San Francisco Fog is setting some fruit finally and the plant just started a growth spurt so it might have a good season. I planted some new ones for me like Sub-Arctic Plenty, but the deer erased them.

My season was good in Chillicothe - when spring looked like it was going to continue to July I potted 100+ tomato plabnts in 20+ gal containers - made my own mix - used a product to inocculate the soil with a variety of micro - endo & ecto micro organisms - fertilized - all organic and had really good success - planted other seedlings when the ground dried up - had to really work the heavy "clay" soil and then planted my tomatoes, peppers & other veggies - I was going to sell plants also but was too busy with the business "About Cooking" so I gave away plants and tested others with new propduct I have been studying for 3 years. (now available retail in Omri & non Omri versions) I grow mostly heirlooms - don't like the big seed companies etc - I have seeds for over 350 varieties so I was trying how several worked back here - wife is from here and we moved back in Aug/July 2010 - will try more varieties this year - gave away a bunch - black krim (12 other blacks & bunch of purples), cherokee purple, green & chocolate - greendoctors - aunt rubys , Evegreen (Ohio tomato & other gree varities) - Snow white & super SW - kelloggs - kbx -sungold select OP - several wild boar farms varieties - black green & bi's - several french, russian and old usa tomatoes plus new ones - NO HYBRIDS

I had the BEST TOMATO YEAR EVER!!! But I pulled them out about a six weeks ago and replanted about two weeks ago. As usual, the little ones did a lot better than the big ones, but I got a lot. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually got tired of them for a minute.

The small tomatoes did very well (cherry). The others did not do so well and I attributed this to the scorching heat. I just could not keep them moist.

It could be that I used too much compose.
