I'm loaded with dumb questions because this is the first time I have witnessed this. I watched them build the nest, she laid 5 eggs, and now she is incubating them. I never see anyone come or go but I know she is in there because I've seen her head looking out the opening a couple of times.
My question is how does she get food. Does the male feed her or can she leave the eggs to go find food for herself?
I only get to watch the boxes for a little while because I moved them to another persons property in a remote location. I won't get to check on them for a few days because of rain coming in tonight. I got permission to install the boxes with free access to the property but If I go in there leaving ruts in the mud I will wear out my welcome fairly soon.

My lady blue leaves the box some and then goes back to sit. I guess she is looking for food but I think the male feeds her also.

Yep, a little of both. Male will feed her but she will also leave and eat on her own. She knows how long she can be gone and how long the eggs need to be incubated.

It's been a long time since we hatched out ducks, but I remember having to spray(mist) the eggs with water to replicate the amount of moisture they'd receive in Nature from the mama duck. Good luck!

I can't remember how long it takes for palamedes or spicebush swallowtail eggs to hatch, because it's been so long since I brought in an egg. I usually bring in the hatchlings. I'm thinking it takes about 5-6 days? If they've been streaked for several days without hatching, chances are they won't, something went wrong. But don't give up just yet, I've seen strange things happen. Sherry
