gourd house being ignored

Can anyone guess as to why my beautiful gourds are being ignored? These have been up since January and are about 15' off the ground.

Hi deanie! Well, I have some thoughts for you. I have been trying since 2008 to establish a Purple Martin colony. This is my 4th season trying, and I am feeling lucky this year! I am offering some nice large plastic gourds. I am also playing Purple Martin attracting CD's to try to lure them into the yard. As a result of erecting the Purple Martin site and playing the music, I have ended up being blessed with nesting Great Crested Flycatchers and also Tree Swallows which return each year. I do not allow them to nest in the gourds intended for the Purple Martins though. They nest elsewhere in the yard in other gourds on Shepherd's hooks. So, I would think that one of those 3 species would be the most likey takers of your gourds. The Flycatchers and the Tree Swallows are not colonial nesters, so a pair would claim one gourd and then not allow any other birds to nest there on that rack. Purple Martins are VERY choosy about where they will nest, and they do not like to be near to any large trees which would allow for cover for predators. I'm not sure how close your rack is to any tall trees. What you might try is to play a Purple Martin CD. Maybe you would get some Martins or at least attract in a pair of Tree Swallows to nest. Thanks so much, Angie. Yes, I would love PMs, TRES or flycatchers (which I have never seen), though at this point any NICE little bird pair would do. The rack is kinda close to some large trees as you can seen. So maybe that's the deterent. Speaking of those large trees, yesterday my husband yelled for me as he was out on the deck (sign he sees something!) and there was a Cooper's hawk perched in a very large tree maybe 150 feet away. He was beautiful! (But if I were a nice little bird checking out real estate, not so beautiful...)

This is an area of expertise for me, please feel free to send me any questions you might have. Most home systems are placed either in a dedicated entertainment room, den or living room Every room will be different depending on your goals, but some rules of thumb; Most systems are 5.1 or 7.1, Meaning 1 center Chanel speaker above or below the TV, two front speakers, two rear speakers and 7.1 systems will have two in the middle of the room. The .1 is the subwoofer which is typically run over an RCA type cable to any corner of the room. You will want all of these wires to terminate in one convenient place where your receiver and DVD player will go, and have an HDMI v1.3 run from the receiver location to the television location. Installing speakers symmetrically in the room will give you the best sound, one in each corner with a centered seating position. As a rule of Thumb, the highest quality speakers are full sized floor standing speakers like Polk, MB Quart, Martin Logan, Focal.. The list goes on. Have your speaker termination plates near the floor for these. Next option are small sat speakers like bose or mirage or any other small box speaker, surface mounted. These typically mount on the wall or ceiling and your jacks should be high on the wall or on the ceiling. In wall speakers typically have a high fidelity, look for MB Quart, Niles, Bose, Infinity or Polk speakers no less than 6.5" in diameter, perferable with multi speaker arrays. The sound in the wall tends to have much better definition since it is directed, compared to ceiling speakers. Finally, in-ceiling speakers are an option. They are out of the way and can be painted to match your ceiling. The real issues comes down to Quality, bigger is better, dont skimp on the speakers of you go in-ceiling. "Beagles and other hounds only bark because they were not taught otherwise." That's the best line in this whole dialoguem and it was submitted by a poster who breeds beagles. The onus here is not on the neighbors. It's on the original poster to train her dog, or move to an area with lots that are bigger than postage stamps. It doesn't matter if the complainant's message was anonymous, except for the fact that it is creating a distraction to the real issue. You don't need to discuss with the neighbors what times the dog barking is bothersome. Simply control the barking. If you really believe that barking is 'just what they do' why did you ever get such a barkey dog in such a congested neighborhood? I have friends with a beagle and have never heard her bark inappropriately. As usual, this is all about owner responsibility and training. How would you react if your neighbor blasted rock and roll music periodically throughout the day, or ran outside and leaned on the horn to their car 8 times a day at random intervals? That's no worse than the disturbance your dog is creating. Would you tell her what time of the day was particularly bothersome? Of course not. It doesn't matter what time is most annoying. All inappropriate barking is annoying. If your dog really barks on leash everytime you pass another dog, your dog is out of control. And the noise in your yard is probably much worse than you imagine. What is the point of tieing him on the deck each day. That's not exercise. If you want to provide fresh air without exercising him, open a window :-) Your neighbors should never have to tolerate listening to your dog bark for no reason. TRAIN YOUR DOG, and keep him inside until you do. I have 3 dogs, and barking annoys me too. I would never inflict it on my neighbors.

Stumpyouch, thanks for the compliment. I did learn how to get the pictures up from a lady on the Building a New House forum. The porch boards are heart pine. They come with instructions to be painted on all four sides which they were with BM All Purpose Industrial Paint with two coats and then right before we move in we'll give them a final coat.

The backsplash tile...is some sort of off brand. Really. But it's quite lovely. I like the sunflower marbles that are popping up over on Kitchens, but I did ming green three houses ago, and I don't want grey marble, so I went with this floral honey/pineapple onyx. The little stone on the Corian is just a loose "petal" - I just find it easier to throw in my samples notebook than the big sheet of tile. As to the Fresh Butter - our kitchen has a lot of windows, but because of the way the house is sited on the lot and because of the new house next door, we don't get as much light as you'd think. The walls in the entire first floor are Sherwin Williams Creamy with SW Pure White trim. When I first sampled the Fresh Butter we had Martha Stewart's Westport Tan (the PO's choice) everywhere. The FB looked good then - now I think it looks a bit washed out for the cabinets. I might move down my current strip or possibly over a strip to Vellum. I need a "gold-er" yellow to ground the painted cabinets. The Fresh Butter, without a glaze, is just too airy in the new LRV of the Creamy wall paint. I think it will be a good while until I master my accessorizing, but I think the main components should be in by Christmas - including the kitchen facelift. We are studiously eating our way through the pantry so as to have to pack less cans of beans and whatnots for while we have no kitchen. i will keep looking for a crane lamp. I managed to score a brass Ralph Lauren Yvonne table lamp for a song on One King's Lane on Thursday. That will be on the table between the two spool chairs.

Hi deanie,
Well, you and I don't live all that far apart, and I can't think of too many birds that would choose a high natural gourd for nesting here, other than the ones I mentioned. I found this web page which lists some cavity nesting birds that will supposedly choose gourds if the height and hole diameter are correct. You can check out the list anyway. Good luck with your gourds!

I was just going to suggest that you decide which kind of bird you wanted to attract, and adjust accordingly, but it looks like bandjzmom's link gives great information on that.

Angie, what a fantastic link you gave me. Thanks so much. Kendra, truly that's the logical way to go about it. I am not sure why I told my husband just stick them way up there -- probably because that's what I usually see. I just hope something nests there. Next time I'll probably do a little more research and think about what I want to attract first!

I have 8 new martin gourds when i put them up I put avery small
layer of pine needles in each one of them.Today I saw 1
martin in and out of the gourds,should I take the pine needles out?

No Pat, don't take the pine needles out. They use them in nest building, and they like to see them in there. My gourds contain a lot of pine straw for them. Lucky you!! If they are going inside the gourd, that is a VERY good sign. Start to watch for them to come into your site in the evenings to spend the night in the gourd. If they do that, then you've probably got yourself a colony established!!! I'd love to hear more about it.
