Another Update: Terrible Discovery

Just finished walking around the back yard and found a clump of blue feathers, obviously my Mama Blue. I am so very distraught and have no idea how she met her demise. The box is baffled and the nest and eggs were totally undisturbed. We do have racoons every now and then who make their way into the yard at night checking out the bird feeders, but they haven't been a problem for the past 2 years.

Will clean out the box as previously mentioned and hope the beautiful male will find a new mate quickly.

This makes me sooooooo sad!

Hi, Donna. Just a unseasoned BB friend here. I know your pain. It is almost like losing a family member! I lost a female Blue last year, too. Fortunately, the male is back with his new wife. They have 4 eggs in the box, which is baffled, sparrow spooked, and wren guarded. I am hoping for a hatching by this Thursday..

Donna, I was afraid that this would be your news. It's devastating, I know. It sounds like your mama blue might have been the target of a winged predator. I see clumps of dove and robin feathers fairly often on the trails and have only seen those of a bluebird once. Made me sick. It's nature, unfortunately, and at least your mystery appears to be solved. I know that won't make you feel any better but papa is a tough guy and I'm confident he will try again. I'm thinking about you.

What great news Robyn has filed, and is turning that page in her life. I hate to celebrate anyones divorce filing but I think this marriage was clearly over - best she is on her way to being happy again. Please be careful not to overdo....that was a very long time not to be using that leg and the muscles will need gradual buildup. Have to tell you, I can remember getting out to weed while still using one crutch, but I ended up on hands and knees involved in my task and lost track of where I was. Where I was when I finished weeding - at the other end of the garden with no way to stand or walk back and no one home. I crawled, feeling really dumb. ;)

Why didn't I know it at the time??? Oooh and you have a cute hubby too! Happy birthday to your daughter! My second oldest boy, Pat, just turned 9 in June! There are very few pics of me at all because I am always the one behind the camera! Nobody else picks one up around here but me. Sigh. My kids will all look at pictures after I am dead and gone and wonder if they even had a mom to show their kids! LOL! Did you see medo's box I sent her??? The Postal workers went postal on it! They boogied it! I couldn't believe they did that! It has self adhesive on both ends and the stuff really sticks well! I have never had them open one of my boxes before, maybe they thought the blackberry plants were some illegal stuff dudes! LOL! Medo: Congrats on the new faucet! Love the dream catcher! I'm just now seeing this post. Seeing pics of your many birds and hearing about their antics has been enjoyable, although I feel for poor little Scout. I hope that you'll continue to keep us posted on them all, as I'm a huge lover of birds of all kinds. I'm loving the landscape progress, too. Regarding Xeriscaping with rocks, gravel, etc. It gained great popularity here in New Mexico, as it did in many other arid and semi-arid locals across the Southwest, back in the early-Eighties. This was when I was studying to become a Master Gardener. I still recall many of my instructors telling us that people would soon see "the dark side" of using rock as mulch in their xeriscaped yards. And we did. On one hand, it's very practical, but even with the best weed barrier put down underneath, you'll end up with weeds within a year. That's because the wind will always blow dirt in, which settles down between your rocks, gravel, etc., thus creating a good environment for many weeds. The heat from our intense southwest sun is absorbed by the rocks, gravel, etc. It can easily create an environment too hot/ harsh for many flowers to do well, but our feisty, tough SW weeds seem to thrive on it. Yes, the accumulated dirt may be shallow, but those tricky weed roots can easily grow sideways to take hold. So then you're stuck with what to do with the accumulating dirt between the gravel, etc. You can, of course, pull out the weeds as they sprout, but you'll eventually need to shovel up the rocks -especially if you're using gravel or the crusher fines- get rid of the accumulated dirt around them and start over again. Gardening here in the Southwest can be trying, to say the least! I've used the crusher fines. I've used larger rock. I've left the dirt exposed. There are pros and cons to them all, but you end up with weeds, regardless (LOL). What works for me here is to forego the weed barrier and just use several inches of treated bark mulch around my plants. The blown in dirt just drops down to the dirt below. I add more bark on top every couple of years. It works for me, But regardless of what you go with, invest in a good narrow headed, long-handled weeding pronged rake for working around your cacti. The breezes and winds also blow in trash that is much easier to pull out with the right tool. Those cactus spines are vicious!

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before now! Great job, Jojoco! Productive, creative and fun. My grandmother built a dollhouse for my younger sister, but I think I loved it even more than she did. I always thought it would be great fun to do one. The only one I have done was inside a jewelry box. I remember the bed was a fabric covered penny and I thought a round bed was the coolest thing ever. It would be fun to do a standard sized one.

Many thanks for your kind words. It is just so hearbreaking and so many of you have experienced the same thing. Yes Kathy, at least the mystery is solved. I didn't even notice the feathers when I checked the eggs again, then decided to take a look around the yard.

I do consider them "my" family! These wonderful creatures bring me so much joy!

VERY sorry Donna !! Perhaps a hawk or owl in the am or pm. I know they have to feed their babies too but DAMN let them have sparrows,starlings, etc. I KNOW pop will pair up again & reward you with a new batch. DAMN nature sometimes!! Love, Al, Annapolis, Md.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is my greatest fear that something will get one of my Blues despite my work to protect them. They are just so precious, it makes it that much harder to take a loss like this. As Al said, I wish they would go after the house sparrows and starlings, and leave the Blues alone!

Donna I'm so sorry to here of your loss. Last yr. was my first yr Blue Birding and my first nesting was killed by wrens and I cried as if one of my kids....your right they bring so much joy. I had'nt seen my mama blue today so this evening I went out and raised up the wren guard still couldn't see inside to dark so I ever so gentley open the door slowly and she was in there sitting on her eggs....I was so thrilled to see she was ok. I worry even though I have the baffle, wren guard and spooker up. Like Al said hawks or owls worry me, had a hawk yesterday almost fly into my pic window. But I hope your Mr. Blue finds a new mate and you have a new nesting soon.

Donna, I, too, know your pain. People who don't know how these birds are part of our life will say that 'this is part of nature.' To which I respond: 'it is but I don't have to like it!!'

I am so sorry Donna, feather piles = hawk. We have lots of hawks around however they mostly take Robins and Mourning Doves but I always fear it could be a Bluebird. I sure hope your Dad finds a new girl.

I have had a hawk in my yard with feathers everywhere but I did not know they get the robins and doves. I did think a hawk got a baby robin from my yard last year. Why do they get these birds? Because they are an easy catch?? Just curious! Sorry for your loss Donna!

hammom, I think hawks like the Mourning Doves because they are slow and the Robin fleglings too cause they are slow. 9 times out of 10 the feather piles we find are young Robins or Mourning Doves. Found a Grackle feather pile earlier this week. Last year I also found a Flicker feather pile later in Summer, I am sure it was a fledgling.
We have both Sharp Shinned and Coopers hawks around here.
