still hope?

My blues laid five eggs, the last being the weekend of march 20. So that's like 18 days. I just candled the eggs. They weren't totally clear like that one time, but all I could see is that the bottom end is clear, which matches the good egg pic on the chicken egg page I found via sialis. I really could not see anything else.

We did have a pretty good cold snap in that period of weeks, but it was brief.

Should I wait, or clean out the box at this point?

Definitely wait! I've had two instances where the hatching occurred past the normal 14 day period. Especially for one of the first nestings.

Last year after a failed attempt another batch of eggs layed seemed like they weren't gonna hatch. I was depressed...the thought of a 3rd attempt...then I opened the nestbox, and what do you know? Hatched babies! I was SO happy! Last year was quite a ride. Every year is different. Hope they hatch!!!!

Betty, I agree with Tim. Wait this one out until ALL hope has definitely passed. I assume that the mom is still incubating? Cold snaps can make a difference.~~Angie

Usually if its red that means its coming back and will turn green in strips or mottled. If it had been black or ash gray especially tips, then that part was dead. I've grown blueberries for 5 years in pots out in cold and snow on cement patio no covering. They are very slow to turn sometimes when they come out of hibernation. From brown stems that on another plant would look dead, they turn red and can even flower before finishing the change to green. I had some red branches with pinkish blue flowers this year before branch became green and flowers white. I now have bushes covered with massive clusters of plump berries that will take sometimes up to 2 months to ripen. Hope you didn't throw away yet, still a chance to put in a pot on the side? 14in size is fine for it.

Are you only using perlite as media? I would add more potting soil. Try bag rooting. I get almost 100% success rate. https://southerncaliforniaplumeriasociety.com/bag-rooting-methods/

I actually have two about to bend and fall off ripe. I can't wait! Next week it will be in the 70's when 50's is normal, and no night temps below the 50's. I usually hit the 30's at this time of year. I am lucky I have this month to make up for a lost hot month. I will snap a couple pics) Glad you managed to grab a couple. It is looking colder than normal for you next week which is also strange.

Grief no - don't pull them out. This sort of thing happens to mine every year...sometimes a couple of times or more. The tuber holds enough energy to push more growth so if you are proactive with protection (such as a carefully set-up cloche system), the dahlias will perk up. I just checked my box - just peeked in enough to see that the eggs hatched! No way to know how many without disturbing.

So they hadn't hatched on the 7, and they are dark and fuzzy on the 12.

Thanks for telling me to wait!!

Oh wonderful news!!!!! I am always an advocate of waitng until WELL after any chance of hope has passed! We just never know. :o)
