Eggs on the ground

I had a bluebird nest in a box with 4 eggs. Adults haven't been around in over a week. No activity at all. Marked the eggs, they were never turned. I felt the nest had been abandoned but was going to wait another week and see for sure. I checked them yesterday, no change. I went out a little bit ago, eggs were on the ground. I haven't noticed a sparrow or wren, but that's not to say they aren't around. I got the eggs, which by the way, we're empty, (they should have hatched this weekend, so I guess they were not viable ones) and put them in a plastic bag. I guess I need to clean the box out. This particular box did not have a wooden piece around the whole or any kind of guard. Guess I am not really sure what destroyed the eggs. Any ideas?
