Can I put fishing LIne on Now?

I have a bluebird building a nest in one of my boxes. Looks as though it is almost finished but I have seen a HOSP coming around and the blues have been chasing him off. Can I put fishing line on the box now to deter the HOSP or do I need to wait for the first egg. I do have a sparrow spooker also but I know I need to wait for the first egg.

I don't have much experience with the mono-filament line but i know HOSP hate it because they can't see well and EABL don't mind it because they can see it. Feel free to experiment at your own will and observe shortly after putting some on to make sure the BB accept it. If they do not, take it down. I don't remember reading any rules about the first egg for fishing line, only sparrow spookers. Let us know what happens!

We put mono on after the Blues had chosen the box, but before they started building a nest even. They continued to build a nest, and paid no attention to the mono. We're trying to not use a sparrow spooker (yet). We have not seen any hosp since putting the mono on.

Why ruin good fish that could be used for food? Just go to the store and buy some fish emulsion and use it. It will be a lot cheaper and better for the plant, and will smell a lot better all next week, and will be a lot less work and bathing, after you use it,LOL LOL Dan

Surprisingly, I am on one of the old 1920s lots that is a half acre!!!!! Long and skinny -- house up front, backyard and garden in middle, and woods at the end. The house has ALL sorts of goofy "old house problems," but we love it. It's a nice, quiet, walkable neighborhood. Unfortunately, the yard is so very hospitable that a whole family of squirrels loves it too. And they eat out at my garden every day like it is a restaurant. Oh well! I take Bells Ferry as a shortcut to Barrett Pkwy all the time. I know Barrett Pkwy is a headache, but so nice for shopping and eating out!!!!!!

and a foam like stuff now in HD? Custom Building Products Easyboard. It's a brand new product, out just about a year now. I'll let it "circulate" for a while before I trust it. :-) As for the others, my own preference is for Durock, but any of the others will do fine. As for knowing where the correct height is. you can't install the tiles first, or the flange on the niche won't be able to slide behind them. What you need to do is figure out what your coursing will be (1 course is 1 tile plus 1 grout joint).Once you know what your coursing will be, check from floor to ceiling to see how you want your tile to fall ( this is what you usually see referred to as "laying out"). Once you know how your tile will fall floor to ceiling, it should be no trouble to find the top edge of the tile midway up the wall, and then you want the shelf on the niche to fall about 1/2" below the top edge of the tile, so that you have a little room to play, in case you're off just a hair. If you look in the pic below, you'll see a line on the side of the niche. That's my tile line, and you can see where the niche will site in relation to it:

uhm. i dont want to burst your bubble or anything. but you shouldnt be doing what you are unless you are planning on breeding. and if your not you either got to be there 24/7 to watch them. if you want more than one betta. you need to have females. 2 female betta is not possible, you need to have 3 or more so they can arrange a pecking order. if you want a male, keep them alone. and if you want to add more fish, make sure they dont have nice flowing fins. other than that their fine. oh and do not put goldfish with bettas. theyre not compatible.

Sagrinin, I actually got to experiment with it!

At my 2nd site, I had a HOSP that was not going in the box. The blues kept chasing him off.

So I tried the mono line despite the HOSP. Nothing in the box for a few days! Now the bluebirds are in the process of building a nest.

I observed the box. Didn't seem to bother the blues at all! The HOSP may have been nearby, but it didn't approach the box!

So although I'm not 100% sure, I think it was a success! Still, remember to put a sparrow spooker up as soon as you get a 1st egg! They're almost bulletproof! Not ever had an attack with one installed!
