We've been putting peanuts , bread and sunflower seed on the front porch, as well as the feeders. Fun to watch the jays come in to get their goodies, probably have 5 or 6 right now!
I also put peanuts out for the Blue Jays and squirrels, and the titmice and cardinals eat them too. I try to put the peanuts in a spot away from the groundfeeding area where the smaller birds eat so they won't get scared away.
The jays are special, though - they fly in with bravado and are always on stage.
Hmm- I used to love them dearly and worried when I didn't see them; that is until I found them killing the robin's babies and being "bully" birds. I watched other birds shriek and hide their fledgings from them. They are still some of the most beautiful birds though.
