Michigan, March 30, 2 bluebird eggs

Oh crap!!!! It is supposed to snow this weekend and it is very cold at night and only in the high 40's during the day. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???????????????????

I am still trying to get a hosp. that has been hanging around, so I put the sparrow spooker until I get him.

I wish I didn't check the nest :(

Oh Crap is right!...get the box taped the best you can. Mine started building but stopped. Thank God. You got worms coming. They will be ok.
I think we got our HOSP male.....and the ladies left with him.
NOT for the squeemish..........
I think we got him with a BB he flew off, we did not see him drop but he and his 2 gals have not been back for 3 days. I would have liked to see a clean shot. I don't wish them any suffering, hubby is an expert when it comes to bow hunting deer but bbs and small birds are a bit different. I feel SO bad.

Lisa I have the back of the box taped up. Should I tape the front door? I want to check to see the final egg count, but I think it would be best to not open the door and let in cold air. Yep, I have 10,000 mealworms coming probably today or tomorrow.

Will the eggs freeze? It is still very cold and as you know we are getting snow this weekend.

I need to get another hosp. too. He keeps changing nest boxes and I can't find the other VanErt trap so I keep going back and forth with the one trap.

Anyway, I don't think I will open the box anymore. I guess I will know how many eggs she laid when I see them fledge :)

Hi All, Homosexual - Hormonal, LOL! It looks like you all have been having good fun! I would of never guess that many rabbits. I read at the beginning that we had until the 5th to join, but then the day after I posted, names went up. I was confused, but I didn't write anything. Since I read through all the posts I see it was upped. It is ok, it wasn't make or break if I didn't join the swap. You all would love to go to the Broadway Market that I've spoke of before before Easter for the Ukrainian and Polish eggs. They are so beautiful. Oh and the Polish pottery and all the yummy food too. I'm just old enough to remember the white gloves and the dresses, etc. It would be nice if everyone got all gussied up like they used to. I hope everyone who is in pain or sick , is better soon! Margaret, I hope your husband is well soon. Dottie, I hope your remodeling goes smoothly. I also hope you don't float away once the snow melts. Remember to post pics from the flower show! I want to go one of these years. I'll be going to the Rochester one later this week. Shirley, Loved the shower pics! Laura, Some people are so stupid. i was reading this thread with interest. i have a situation where it appears i have 8 bluebirds who have hatched in one nest (thursday may 2, they were born). it may be 9, it's hard to tell. while monitoring the nest in late april i noticed what appeared to be eggs missing from the 3 that had been laid earlier in that week. the reality was that the eggs had been pushed down deeper into the nest and covered with pine straw. the mother kept coming back (may have been another species coming in and covering the egg with straw? i have seen no house sparrows here at all) and eventually she started laying again. turns out, there were 10 eggs total in this nest when she was done! i guess five from the first attempt and 5 after that. bottom line, 8 babies are in there now. i'm putting out meal worms twice a day and making sure there's lots of water nearby in the bird bath, and plenty of shelled sunflower seeds for the parents nearby in that feeder. anyone ever seen or heard of a situation like this?

Garlicky Shrimp with Asparagus and Lemon (Fine Cooking) 1 lb. shrimp (21 to 25 per lb.), peeled, deveined, rinsed, and patted dry 3/4 tsp. kosher salt; more as needed Freshly ground black pepper 1 lemon 6 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil 4 medium cloves garlic, thinly sliced 3/4 lb. asparagus, bottoms snapped off, halved lengthwise if thick, and cut into 2-inch lengths (2 cups) 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 2/3 cup low-salt chicken broth 1/2 tsp. cornstarch Sprinkle the shrimp with a scant 1/4 tsp. salt and a few generous grinds of black pepper. Using a peeler, gently shave the zest in strips from the lemon, taking care not to get any of the bitter white pith. Squeeze the lemon to get 1 Tbs. juice. Put a 12-inch skillet (not nonstick) over medium-high heat for 1-1/2 minutes. Add 2 Tbs. of the oil and once it's shimmering hot, add the shrimp in a single layer. Cook undisturbed until the shrimp browns nicely, about 2 minutes. Flip the shrimp and brown the second side, about 1-1/2 minutes. Transfer to a large plate. The shrimp should be a little undercooked. Reduce the heat to medium, add the remaining 4 Tbs. oil and the garlic and cook, tossing, until the garlic starts to sizzle steadily, about 30 seconds. Add the asparagus, lemon zest, and red pepper flakes, sprinkle with 1/2 tsp. salt and cook, tossing often, until the garlic is golden brown and the asparagus looks blistery in places, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the chicken broth, cover, with the lid ajar, and cook until the asparagus is just tender, 1 to 2 minutes. In a small dish, whisk together the cornstarch with 1 Tbs. water, stir into the asparagus mixture, and bring to a boil. Stir in the shrimp, reduce the heat to low, and cook, tossing, until the shrimp is opaque throughout (cut one in half to check), 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the 1 Tbs. lemon juice and then add salt, pepper, and additional lemon juice to taste. Serve immediately.

KENNNNNNNNNNNNNN, what happened to the build and wait???????? There are probably 3 eggs now. I'm not gonna check. It is cold and windy today!!

Oh no Karen, here in WI probably a little north of you I cannot imagine having eggs yet! I haven't even seen the Blues now for over a week it has been so cold! Can't imagine what they are finding to eat, high temps for the past week have only been in the 30's. Hope your eggs are ok!! Guess you will just have to wait until it gets warmer and do a nest check, hopefully the eggs will hatch!

You should leave that spooker on the nestbox until fledging, not just until you get the HOSP, others will come I am sure.

Donna, thanks!! I hope the eggs will be ok too. Yep, once the spooker is on...it stays until the babies leave.

I just taped the side vents, so hope this will help a little. At my house they don't have to worry about what to eat. They have had wax worms and suet all winter.
