I want to say happy spring but...........

We are still under 2-3 ft of snow here and temps still hitting below 0F at night. I hope my Blues don't come back too soon. I cant even order meal worms yet. Anyway I want to say a prayer that we all have a sucessful season and hundres of new baby Blues fill the skies. To all of the new folks welcome, to all my old friends "Let's do this"! Don't forget to brush up on sialis.org! Bring on BlueBird season #10!

oh, lisa!! it's been a brutally cold, snowy winter here, too! things are beginning to look up, spring is springing everywhere. hope you are unburied very soon and wishing you a successful bluebirding summer!!!

Jackie and Jim - How pretty! Your porch and your fence are lovely spots, and I think its always a great idea to add some annuals in with the roses! Enchantedrosez, how strange that red knockout didn't survive for you. I'm in zone 6 too, though maybe zone 6b instead of a (don't know - its central NJ) so maybe that's the difference, but I have had the red knockout for a number of years. Its a good dependable performer in the front outside my deer fence - I have noticed that the deer don't tend to go after knockouts the way they do a lot of other roses, so I grow them outside the fence. Btw, Knockouts are no more prone to rrd than any other roses. Its really the fault of commercial landscapers - they plant huge groups of knockouts on median strips, corporate campuses, etc. and then never monitor them. So they can easily develop rampant rrd - but that would happen with any big planting of any rose that was not monitored.

My Blues don't seem to care about the temperatures. While there are a few bare spots, there's still ice and snow on the ground. It's been in the teens most mornings, and yet they have already chased off the other winter Bluebirds and started building a nest. A few years ago they were sitting on eggs during an ice storm, and all hatched and successfully fledged. So I guess I have to trust that they know what they're doing.

I know that bluebirds will come back even if you are still under 2-3 ft of snow. Don't worry Spring is coming and that means, new baby Blues will fill the skies. I hope you will have a great bluebirding this Spring.
