Oh and I forgot to say that was a real ad on craigslist. If I feel better this weekend I will go check it out.

I'd place it near the food and water, as hens always eat and drink after laying an egg. I have my nests curtained with a layer of black landscaping cloth with a split up the middle. It provides the darkness they love but lets air in, too. Hens do so love their hidey-holes! :) I have other weirdo hens that insist in nesting in some REALLY strange places, so don't be surprised if some of them refuse the nest boxes and instead deposit eggs in your potting shed or something. Right now mine have taken over a half-completed rabbit hutch DH is building. It's become a very trendy spot to lay eggs... Velvet ~:>

itrom.......Last year when chickadees took over our fave BB box after so many year of having only BBs in the box there were reclaim fights but the BBs did not win and we never saw any all summer and that was sad. That particular box is the one we can see easily and we love to watch them and take photos. There are two other boxes nearby so I kept asking myself why can't the cute chickadees just use those...lol. BBs have moved into the fave box and I hope there is peace! Good luck and enjoy whatever nests ...or...put up another box and if you do make sure you follow instructions as to how far from the fist one.

Lisa: Thanks for your post. I did not see the babies last week, husband did. I have checked the nest- it is empty. I have heard some twitter out in the forest that adjoins our grounds- I'd like to think it might be the fledglings, but that may be wishful thinking. Things have been hectic lately so I have not opened the box as faithfully as in past years. There are no broken shells or feathers in box or on ground underneath. The nest was completely clean. We've never had racoons; I have heard owls very far off, but they have never appeared on the property. This box is close to our screen porch and under my office window, so I can usually monitor it by sight most of the time. This box has been in use since 2003; it's had at least one clutch per year. There's another box closer to the woods, and I've seen Mom and Dad Bluebird checking it out in the last two days. I've already cleaned out the box in question, and am going to install a baffle. It's silly to think that standing sentinel during the day will keep the nest box safe at night. Thanks again for your help.
