Mama blue on eggs!

My mother blue is on the nest with 4 eggs. I have the sparrow spooker up and watching everyday. I hope things go well with these eggs. This is the first time to have eggs this early. The past few weeks here have been very nice and warm. We are expecting a little cooler weather next week, but I think things will be ok if she stays with them. I will keep everyone posted on how things go.

Congratulations, that is really cool. I have three more weeks before nest building starts up here. Do keep us posted on the Blues progress.

Congrats on the eggs indigo!! Such an exciting thing! I think that my Blues are just getting ready to build.

hi we have had several mommaflys laying eggs this week, on monday we had a BST laying eggs on the fennel on our porch, she seemed to take forever to decide just where to put them. and yesterday we had our second monarch of the week laying on the honeyvine. I have had to leave many eggs to fend for them selfs, we will be going to Texas on the 18th and I don't know if the girl that will be watching my house will be able to keep up with feeding all the tineys. michelle

Hi deedee, Having your Bluebirds return to nest makes for a very happy Easter indeed. :) Congratulations. We always thoroughly clean our nestbox asap once the last nestling has fledged. Our mama blue (Missy) usually begins building her next nest within a few days. Boy,am I relieved.This morning at 6:15,I saw Daddy at the box,thought he just might be feeding Mom.I didn't want to check that early in case Mom might be laying another egg.Just now when I came home,I decided to check the box.Dad was in a nearby tree and when I opened the box,there was Mom sitting there all crouched down,nice and cozy.she never even moved.Needless to say,I closed the box quickly and left her alone.I was very relieved and excited.I have no idea if there are more than 3 eggs or not,just happy they are ok.Also on the way back to the house,I walked by a box that has been mounted on the side of the garage for a few years and has always gone unoccupied.My husband mentioned the other day that he saw a bird sticking his head out ,but was unsure what it was.As I walked by,I gently tapped and out came a white breasted nuthatch.How exciting,that is a first for me.Very cool.This box is difficult to open,so I will just have to leave it alone and enjoy.Glad to share some good news.....Jane

I was out messing around in the garden this morning and decided to just peek in the box, since the blues have been very present for quite awhile, and to my big surprise, there was a fully made nest! I haven't totally opened to see if there are eggs, but I got the spooker up in minutes! I am sorry the dad will have to give up sunning on the roof, but its all for the best. I'll check for eggs later today. Wow this seems really early, some nights are still in the 30's.

Asparagus coming up too....I hope spring is here for real.

betty, a spooker should go up only after the first egg is laid for two reasons. One is so it is only up when needed when the eggs and chicks are in the nest so HOSP don't become used to it and Two so the Blues are committed to the nestbox and don't abandon it if the spooker scares them away. If they don't have eggs yet they may give up and nest elsewhere if they don't like the spooker. If they do have eggs they will not give up. You may already know this but since you mentioned putting up the spooker before you knew if there were eggs, I thought I would post it.

Thanks so much for the reminder!! It didn't scare them, but I'll go take it down (or at least I will actually check for eggs this time)
