You could argue that it's the vagrants/strays that expand a species' range. Certainly some of the birds in New Mexico and Texas have a good chance at survival as long as they have the instinct to migrate before it gets too cold. Though there's not a lot of hard evidence to back it up, I think that these events are related more to good conditions than bad - a bigger crop of youngsters means more with off-kilter navigation systems who end up in weird places. Many of the early pioneers might not survive, but future "strays" of semitropical species should have an advantage as global warming pushes the limits of suitable breeding and wintering climates further north. One big problem with this scenario is that the natural vegetation, and therefore the birds' habitats, probably won't be able to keep pace with that northern climate shift, leaving the pioneers to either adapt or....

Yes, I did but he only stayed three days. Once the weather cleared, he moved on. I am in the South - actually Central Florida and the temperature at about that time was in the mid 70's, and we had had cloudy weather for two days and misty rain. The day I took the picture was the last day I saw him. I did set up a feeder but I also have lots of hummingbird plants like Cape Honeysuckle, Firespike, pentas, Salvias, Cuphea, all of which were and still are in bloom now.

Barbra, I also love Hummingbirds and have a feeder outside my great room. Love seeing them go crazy and the Alpha male protecting "his feeder" LOL.. they are so much fun to watch. YOU are so lucky to have an White Hummingbird. That is very unusual. I agree with KayJones that you should post a pic . ALso to the Hummingbird forum too! I look over there sometimes to see where the birds are migrating and when i will see them return to my area. It is fun to hear people report on where they are.. Thanks for the pics.. Wendy.. Marti, I think she was picked on more than the others, but she stood out. They pick on each other all day long. There were a few birds that would stand sentry over a certain feeder, and would attack birds that went to that feeder. I watched them for 4 days, and really got to know their habits. I knew the white hummingbird, I could tell you where she was and about when she would come down to feed. This was really nice for the two ladies that came to take pictures. I wanted and got binoculars for Christmas, so I am ready this year. I called her Angel. Barbra
