How do I know when it's ripe?...

It is very pretty and interesting. I am afraid I wouldn't know when it was ripe either. I let all my Ananas Noir rot last year because I didn't know when it was ripe.

Any of the greenish tomatoes, I tell when they are ripe by feel.

Close your eyes and put your hand around the tomato, you can feel when it is heavy and a little soft. Then it is ripe.

Also, if it is still on the vine, it will usually separate from the vine very easy when it is ripe. Like if you hold it and it falls into your hand, it is time.

Raybo, I meant to tell you another thing I read about tomato russet mites that might help with your war against them. They can't fly and must crawl to get on your plants. If you can keep your vines pruned and tied up to the cage, that might help to prevent them from spreading from one planter to another. You could also spray the outside of the containers with a long acting bug killer that would never come in contact with the plants or fruit. An organic alternative would be to put a coat of TangleTrap on the outside of the container so they can't craw up an onto the plants. good luck Greg

Ray, I envy your passion for gardening. After a disappointing summer of tomato, I'm done with warm crops. My 2nd round of tomato, bean, and cukes went in around May/June, and that'll have to last till November. When our one week of summer is over, I'll move on to planting the fall crops.

I picked my first Pink Berkeley Tie Dye and it was obvious when it started to blush - before, it was green with green stripes, then some of the green stripes turned - well, a rosy brown maybe. But after I picked it, it was a bit puzzling as to when it was ready to eat. I finally just cut it up when it started to get a little less firm - and it was great.

I live in Southern CA and I didn't get shoulder cracks on this tomato. I actually grew this variety last year. It was the PL/Pink. I also found it to be a novelty and not really that great as far as taste. We had a great tomato growing year here and it will be until mid Nov.

In my Berkeley Tie Dyes, all that green that you are showing is yellow when they are ripe. BTD isn't a green tomato, it's a yellow.
