Bluebirds in NE Ohio this winter

For the last 2 weeks, mid February. we have had bluebirds around our property. We have bluebirds in spring and summer, but the middle of winter? There seems to be at least 2 pair and maybe 3. I know that the south has had unusually cold weather, but we have had very low temps. and more than average snow fall. I'm trying to help them out with some bluebird feeding pellets and dehydrated meal worms. If anyone has any ideas as to why they're here and if anything that I can do to help them out, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks,Luke NE Ohio

Hi Luke,
I am in south east Ohio and we've had bluebirds here. I have several bluebird houses around the yard and I saw 5 bluebirds in a tree near one of the houses. It was getting dark and one by one they landed on the board fence where the birdhouse was and all five went into the house. I've never seen that before and was suprised since I've heard how territorial they are. Hopefully someone will answer your question about helping them through the winter. What are bluebird feeding pellets. I've never ran across those when I've been buying bird feed.

I keep a heated bird bath. Also, I put out mealworms and crumbled suet in a feeder that the larger birds cannot get into. I also put out a standard suet cage with homemade suet in it. I'm in MA and I have two males and three females that have stayed the winter. They don't get territorial until breeding season, and will stick together in flocks in the winter. Here's a picture I took today of some of them on the suet cage.

You need to wait until the roses are completely dormant and there isn't a chance that it will warm back up again. I don't do mine until December most years now. Last year did catch us off guard but we just went out and did it in the cold and snow anyway. Better that than putting it on too soon. If it's too warm it will cause mold and canker to grow on them.

carp ... you know.. conifers is the first place that i learned.. solely .. the latin names .... and now i have problems because i dont know common names ... i confused my death march Cupressus glabra 'Blue Ice' with your request for info on Cedrus libani [was atlantica] 'Glauca Pendula' i got my twisty trunked glauca pendula .. late season.. super bargain from bigboxstore .... first winter ... the 5 foot spiral tree died down to snow cover ... or about one foot .. thank god for snow that year... or it was a goner .... thereafter .... for 5 years.. it has survived .... pure sand.. irrigation... in the winter.. in the shade of some arbs ... but full sun in summer .... i now change SKIP IT.. to give it a try ... if it is cheap ... its really neat.. and worth a roll of the dice for 10 or 20 bucks .... try for local or northern grown stock .... gee tree farm near Jackson MI ... or girards nursery near saybrook OH .... both do mail order ... or OR in VERY EARLY SPRING ..... though you may need to protect it until z5 weather catches up to z8 OR .... ken

Hydrangeasohio, does your detached garage go below freezing during winter? If the pots will not freeze inside, it should be OK. However, I just don't think that you will be happy with the end results if the hydrangeas stay in the pots for a number of years. They really are much happier in the ground. For this same reason, I gave up some of my hydrangeas and gave them to friends, simply because I didn't have the ground space and they were not happy in the pots over the years. They included some Kaleidoscope (oops, I can't even remember the name now!! Ouch...), Forever and Ever, Claudie etc. All I have left in the ground now are my Endless Summer, Annabelle, and a number of paniculatas! I love my Annabelle and the P's because they are so carefree and hardy. OK, they don't have the colors of the macrophylla's but then my philosophy of gardening is, if you need too much babying, you don't belong to my yard! LOL! So, to answer your question, I do NOT winter protect my hydrangeas....just too lazy to do so..... LOL

what is the suet you feed. I didn't know they ate suet.

I make the suet. You can find recipes on Sialis. I took a recipe from there and just adjusted it a bit. I grind up sunflower seeds and use half chunky peanut butter and half ground sunflower seeds in their suet. They love it, and it keeps them fed all winter.

Bluebirds also love Bark Butter from Wild Birds Unlimited... I live in Southern NH where they stay here all winter and they love this stuff. My husband took a birch log and cored a bunch of plugs in it for me and thats what I use for a feeder.

If there is a good source they will often stay over winter. This past winter was not the one to try to stay, I found 6 dead blues in different boxes this spring.
