Greetings to all,

Even though here in NW Georgia the temps are this week in the 20s and 30s, Spring marches closer and closer. In the past years of birding (esp. bluebirding), I've not been very organized in keeping records. In past years, I've typed tomes here, about the good things and not-so-good things that have happened inside (and outside) the bird houses that have video cameras in them. Last year I vowed I'd do better this year.

To that end, I've started a blog. First time I've done one and I'm still learning. I wasn't going to 'announce' it until I had it perfect but that won't happen. And the bluebirds are telling me it won't be long till they will be starting their first nest. So, if you'd like to take a 'test drive', it's

P.S. Your pic "Gulping up mealies" looks to me like a pine warbler (white eye-ring & wingbars). They are often attracted to seed feeders; it's the only warbler that eats large quantities of seeds (especially pine seeds, thus the name). Their song reminds me of my old sewing machine LOL.
Compare some online images. I think they are year-round in your area, I only see them in summer.

As far as the little yellow 'mealworm gulper,' when my husband saw the pic, he said, too, that it's not a goldfinch. When I took that photo, it was cold and the birds were all fluffed up but it does resemble the pine warbler pic that you showed. I haven't seen it for a few days. I'm going to keep an eye out and try to take another photo.

Dontcha hate when the carry on isn't big enough for the rocks? (or in my case all the wine last time I was in Ohio). Thank god they make 'em with wheels now. About 7 years ago I drove to Alaska with the folks. My Dad is a stickler for not trashing the inside of the car, so Mom and I kept a sort of briefcase for all the maps, brochures, journals, and things we picked up on the way, kept it all neat and easy to find stuff; had shoulder packs for all the junk we'd need during a day; of 'course a litter bag so we wouldn't strew garbage all over in the back seat :), etc...He never found out we were stashing rocks in the trunk (up in and around the spare, heaven forbid we'd put more stuff in the car) 'til we got home. But I have the most amazing collection of rocks from that trip, some of them pretty big, and I can still tell stories about where every one was found. They're all in my gardens :) sigh...what a great trip that one was...i need to go back...

I would test drive another 3 or 4 trucks and see which one I liked the best. Just remember every vehicle feels different. Some people can feel the difference some people can't. So don't let a salesman tell you they are all the same. Good Luck Bob

I am so glad that you piped up about your Frigidaire issue, Practigal. Thank you. I don't think it was a coincidence that you were participating in this thread. So..is it crumbs of rust dropping down from the burner...or, is it rust coming up through the paint...or is it oxidation of the gas itself, that maybe it is burning "dirty"? Good ideas, Mrsnyefnyef. I have an update, but I'll share it at the end of my post. ; ) I agree, Eurekachef. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the BS rangetop after test driving it (unless you don't like standing over a high heat cooker.) "my regrets comments was that I just didn't want you to finish your project and then turn back and say, well I should have..." Ah, I understood what you were getting at much better that time, Gooster. That makes a lot of sense. Here is the update: I found 2 incredibly good deals at Goedekers website this weekend for scratch and dent Miele's. The cooktop (yes, a cooktop, not a rangetop) is 42" wide and has 6 burners. They looked like they are configured *perfectly* for the way we cook. Originally I was looking for all the same BtU's on the burners, but these should work fine because of the configuration. Originally I was looking for sealed burners, which this has. The knobs are off to the side rather than on the front. I find this to be a nice feature since I tend to lean into whatever I'm cooking. This way I won't be lighting the stove with my belly! Also, little ones will have a harder time reaching the knobs. Finally, at about $1200 less than full price, it was too good a deal to pass up. They also had a set of 30" Miele Master Chef double ovens for almost half price (open box). I hemmed and hawed for a while on this one. It's definitely more high-tech than what I was originally looking for. In order to do the cooktop, we'd have to head into wall oven land. Wall oven land was full of techy gizmos. Given that, I might as well try one that is highly regarded by bakers and has the lowest repair rate in the industry (according to Yale Appliance's website, anyway.) Thank you all for helping me process this big decision! I really appreciate the input each of you gave me.

Strait, I bought miracle blur the other day and the same thing happens to me. The first time I used it I put it on top of Lancôme Absolue cream. The pilling was awful. The next day I tried it over a moisturizer by Olay. It didn't pill nearly as much but it still annoyed me. It probably took five minutes of inspecting my face and brushing the pills away with a make up sponge. I think the pilling is caused by a reaction of the two products. I was surprised at how small the tube is and how difficult it is to coax the product out. I wonder if mine is old? It comes out as a thick glob when I squeeze hard enough to get a smidgen out. I think I am going to write to L'Oreal and ask for a refund.

I should have mentioned that you don't need to have an account where I have this blog, anyone can look at it. And you should be able to make comments as well (you can make the anonymously even).

I added some photos this morning of "Daddy Blue" sitting on the nest box and going inside. They are from one of the days when I got video from inside the box of him checking his domain (the videos from Feb. 10th and 12th are earlier in the blog).

Thank you lcmoore! Your video of the BBs checking out the box confirmed for me how meticulously clean BBs are. I think the male was picking up mites. I've noticed that every time I let a hosp invade my box, I'll find mites along with the hosps usual mess. And I've noticed that if I do a sloppy poor job of cleaning the box out, and fail to kill the mites, the BB's snub their noses at it and won't move in.
So standard operational procedure involves liberally spraying the inside and out with rubbing alcohol, followed by a thorough brushing and rinsing, then a full day drying in the sun. Then they'll move in.

Thanks 'neopyte' for your observations. There aren't any mites in there. I think what he's finding is what's left over from a downy woodpecker who roosted in the box over the winter. There's some small feathers and just general 'stuff' that gets blown into the box when we have some high winds which we've had off and on during the winter. There are some air vents that I forgot to seal off for the winter. I did scrub the box out at the end of last season. I think I need to take my brush out and clean it out better.
