Bird ID, please?

Saw this bird awhile ago eating berries off the bunches of holly which I had hung on the picket fence after Christmas. Then it perched in the crabapple tree to eat the apples. I couldn't find it in my bird book, is it a Flycatcher? a Warbler of some sort? I'm in Northeastern Ohio.

I saw the photo of the N.Mockingbird in the book, but passed it by thinking I've never heard tell of this bird in my area before. Thank you very much!

Molly, I bet you have more kinds of birds than you realize, too.. When I had knee replacement surgery in late August three years ago I spent a lot of time in a recliner that faced the bird bath, I kept noticing unusual (for me) birds visiting so I kept binoculars and a bird ID book close by. I was very surprised at the number of various bird species migrating through that I had never noticed before.

Sparky10, Yes, I have a basset, Mr. Peabody. Bassets are in the family. My brother has 2 and a cousin has 1. They will sure brighten your day! Did the blue birds return? I hear them more than see them, even though they are bright blue. Susan

Did it have that black line between his beak and his eye? If so, it was probably a Northern Mockingbird. I know I'm still seeing them around here.

I agree with Red-winged Blackbird, and probably an immature male. That bar on the shoulder (coverts?) is not usually found on a female. Nice pictures! Claire

These guys have a pretty extensive range, though perhaps they're more common in southern tier states (they're certainly abundant in SE AZ). Hopefully it will stick around for you; they're amazing songsters.

Yes, Northern Mockingbird -- this TN gal's state bird. We have zillions of these. Mine also let me get pretty close and they'll hold still for a picture too! I do hope he sticks around for you.
