quiet - everyone is busy writing???

Its gone very quiet around here and I assume that is because you are all busy writing away and getting starting with your gardens.

My first spring flush of writings was printed last week in the spring specials, so nothing special in the wings for immediate pressure. The garden still has pockets of snow in it so true gardening is out of the question - but I did get my seeds out and have the catalogues at hand to do some orders soon - no time before now.

I'm writing songs and one of them is a novelty tune about gardening. All this keeps me busy and offers a ready excuse on why I am not working on my gardening book.

Yeah bud, you are right - but it's not like I'm making different versions of my story, just sorting things out with all of your help. You have absolutely helped figure this out. I really thought he lived here before we did - it hadn't occurred to me at that point that it might be tied to a different address. For some reason, in my mind it was like the phone number was assigned to the phone jacks in this exact apartment in which we live (lame I know)...and not to the person or business itself. It seemed to click in my mind when I read your first post - when you said "Are you SURE the calls you are getting are for the former tenent and not someone else who had the same number?" I looked again in the online directories after reading that post (found all those sites originally by googling our current phone number) and noticed that you could click an additional link to get the address and a map - and all the listings for that number had the same address, which is amazingly close to our apartments - and the listing is for the guy for whom these people are asking when they call. So, I no longer think he lived in our exact apartment and whether he lived in the same complex to be so close to work, or not- it definitely looks like this is his old number and it got reassigned to us like bud said. Since we have no idea whether this guy is going to update his number on all those sites even though he has been advised he is missing multiple calls each day, I really like the idea of just turning off the ringer and recording what talley sue said as a new outgoing message. Thanks talley sue, really ! Bud thank you too - I can for sure admit I am sort of a ditz. . .

Hi Clara (and Pamela and Leahcate)! I just saw your post. My sister was just here and she quilts (I don't). Quilting is so intricate and detailed that I wouldn't even be able to get started, least of all enjoy it! My hat is off to you for realizing it's supposed to be fun. Clara, I haven't really found any forums for support, but decided to do what I knew how to do when I was first diagnosed. (There were a few on the cooking forum who helped me out initially.) I jumped immediately into an old Weight Watcher's diet until I got Diabetes nutrition education, along with my blood testing kit. I felt like I was flying blind until I started testing my Blood Glucose (BG), but after that was easily able to see the correlation between what I was eating and how it affected me. What's important are Little Meals, with some protein always included, with definite snacks in-between keep your BG more stable. I've been eating apples with a little peanut butter, or celery with PB or cheese. You'll have to limit your carbs and spread them out throughout the day...it's amazing how many carbs are in a large apple! I started actively reading labels and seeing how much a portion was (much less than I had been enjoying.) Google Diabetic Gourmet Magazine; there is good information there, and I periodically check to remind myself of how important it is keep tight control of Diabetes. My doctor suggested ''Diabetes for Dummies'' which was very helpful to me. I still pull it out to read when I have a question about something. There's some good info on the Mojo thread about the Glycemic Index (good carbs that are slower to raise BG), which helped me a lot. The thing you have to do is eat! Then wait two hours before you eat again. If you'd like a support buddy, please e-mail me (My Page) and we'll chat. I know how overwhelming it is at first, but once you push through this and get regulated with meds/diet, you'll have so much energy you'll feel like your old (in my case very old!) self. After months and months of looking for a brown-tone granite with movement that wouldn't make me crazy trying to figure out how to meet at the seams when it came time to install, I decided to go with a simple (but not solid) gray-black called Impala Black. Once that was decided I found a "quiet" silver-gray tumbled 4"x4" tile for the backsplash. The silvery color really complimented the black granite. It came time to order the tile and as luck would have it, the place we were going to order it from just got a small shipment in so they could make a sample board for customers to refer to. I didn't even recognize the tile when I saw it. It was coming out of the quarry more blue than silver and not at all the look I was going for. We had about 36 hours to choose a new backsplash. Because I went with a simple (no movement) granite, our options were greatly increased. As such, we ended up with the "busy" Jeffrey Court Quart Brick Fire & Ice. No regrets. Still, I was curious what the first tile would have looked like so I did a Photoshop mock-up. While it wasn't a bad look really, I think the Fire & Ice really makes a statement and fits more into my home. Here are the two versions. Now this - " It's just upsetting to not be fully happy after spending so much time and money on a project." makes perfect sense to me. You're now singing my tune. However bear in mind that I am occasionally crazy too, so there's that. LOL. Here's what I can tell you - I am rarely 100% happy with any particular project. Hindsight is brutal for me. I often second-guess details and wonder if I should have chosen a different path. I have had to make my peace with the fact that perfect does not exist, for me. Once I allow myself to start feeling like, "I spent "X amount of dollars on this and it's still not exactly right...", I realize I'm on the bus back to crazy-town again. I obviously don't know you and so I have no idea if any of this resonates with you. All I can tell you is that from the outside looking in...you've had a a pretty good outcome in the grand scheme of things. In some ways it's sad our world has come to this - but - the cabinets you chose are installed, the finishes you selected are done, your house is back together, contractors did what they said they would do for the price that they said they would, and apparently you didn't go bankrupt in the process. Around these parts that's a win. I'm so sorry you're not happy. I've soooo been there and it's an awful feeling. I truly hope it fades in time and you come to love it all.

I have fallen victim to the relentless winter that will not end here in the Midwest. While we're not getting any real accumulation, it seems to snow every other day which of course means that our weather continues to be colder than normal.

I went to London three weeks ago. Lots of people told me I would be quite pleased to see how far ahead spring is in London. It snowed. Really.

Monday I had one of those miserable, discouraging days at work where nothing seemed to go right. When I got home I thought I'd take a walk around the yard to look for signs of spring and new growth. By the end of my walk, I really felt different. Yep, instead of feeling depressed, now I felt downright suicidal. The combined effects of prolonged cold weather, a new puppy (okay, this was self-inflicted) and the hungry rabbits will mean a lot of replanting later this year.

So about now you're probably sorry you asked. I'll go back to being quiet now.

Writing has been taking place over the course of the last two months. Had one article published with the Heirloom Gardener Magazine and sent in two more. Finished one for Iowa Gardening and have one due for Iowa Horticulturist. But I would much rather spend my time outside dreaming and exploring. The reticulatas are a tad late this year mainly because it has been a dry winter. Thankfully though we are receiving precipitation. I am absolutely giddy about the miniature dwarf iris and can't wait for them to bloom.

Oh why can't spring just get here?

I took out time to play in the garden today (some pruning, but mostly taking photos of flowers), but now the words are flowing and I'll be chained to my work computer (not this one) all night long.
