Habitat restoration (in part)

We have a program by which part of our land can be certified as a "Native Habitat" (you get a nice little plaque). The thought of not having to mow does not distress me in the least.

The previous owners of the lot clear cut a portion of the lot and left scattered pockets of trees. I would like to have some fruit bushes and trees in the clear portion. The rest of the lot can go back to being woodland.

I have small mimosa trees and small poplar trees scattered throughout the cleared area along with some varieties of oak. How do I discourage the mimosa? Should I use Round-Up? Or is there another quickly degrading herbicide?

Native blueberries would make a fine plant in the clear portion. You can usually find them as 3 gallon plants at Home Depot in late spring. A bonus is that they often have excellent fall color.

For the mimosa, cut the plant off to expose the cambrium layer just beneath the outer bark. Apply Brush-B-Gon or something similar to the ring around the edge. If the stump resprouts, clip off the new shoots until the plant gives up (runs out of energy).

High strength RounUp used the way Esh mentioned above would probably work. It is supposed to be more effective to do a cut stem application of herbicide when the tree is preparing for dormancy since it sends more sap down to prepare for winter (not sure how hard your winters are however). The suggestion of blueberry shrubs sounds great and they do tend to be easy to find and purchase. I think Paw Paw trees might be nice for your area also. Those mimosas probably left some seeds behind so some follow up will probably be required. Mulch all of your plantings. Best of luck.

It is a wonderful place. I want to get some old windows to hang on the balcony to act as a privacy screen. My neighbor goes out and smokes on her balcony about every 10 minutes. When I'm out there during the summer, I always feel obligated to talk to her even when I am busy crafting. Maybe if I hang the windows between our balconies, I can just ignore her.

I got a cast iron sink at the re-store for a rustic cabin. I also got some pretty nice Walker Zanger tile there. When I got the tile they were having some sort of tile special and I got a really good price. It took a long, long time to go through the boxes, make sure my tile matched, and to get enough to do any kind of job. I ended up with enough to do bathroom wainscoting, but I will need to use a different tile for the floor and tub surround. I have been back several times since and they still have some of high end tiles, but IMHO it is way, way overpriced. It's only about 60% off retail and you can only get a few square feet! Not worth it. I have seen nice bath vanities a few times, but never a full set of kitchen cabs that I would ever consider putting in a new build. Maybe in a rehabed rental unit. I think you can do OK with toilets and sinks there and maybe faucets. I have also seen some nice doors, but you won't get a matched set for a while house. In general, there is a lot of junk and it's not that cheap. I've got to suspect that the really good stuff gets snapped up by insiders. I know if I volunteered there I'd have my eyes open.

Replacement parts for Restoration Hardware Pivot Mirror

Hello, my name is Gloria. I purchased my mirrors in 2005. I also lost the finials to one of my Restoration Hardware Grafton style pivoting mirror. I have been trying to replace them since 8/2018 with no luck. I found out that RH changed vendors for their mirrors and the finials are now made as one piece instead of the two piece style. Also, after looking at the pictures above, the frame of the mirror where the finials attach - the part that protrudes and the finial fits over - has also changed. The older mirrors like mine has a nut closest to the frame instead of the round piece and then has the longer round piece, but instead of a slit in the end of the piece, I have a threaded opening for a screw. The first part of the finial has a hole to receive the second part which is the screw. The screw is a large decorative piece that is fed through the finial and screws into the threaded part of the protruding round piece of the mirror. It is used to loosen/tighten and adjust the position of the pivoting mirror. I have a model number for the lost finials and sent RH pictures of the finials I needed as well as a picture of the mirror where the finials attached. I was sent the newer finials that don't fit over the screw on the mirror. You are right about the finials being interchangeable, as I tried the Grafton and the Bistro styles and the part that fits onto the mirror is identical. I inquired about the previous vendor and was told that they were not allowed to divulge that information. I would love to know who it was and contact them. Anyone know who it was? I am going to check into the Pottery Barn pivoting mirrors to see if that finial fits since it is made like the RH mirrors. I'll also take a look at the metal hanging strips to see if that will work, but I wonder how they attach to the mirror and if the part of the mirror where the finials attach are just going to be sticking out the sides looking crazy. If anything works, I'll let you know.

If you are looking for berry bushes for wildlife, I'd keep my eyes open this fall in your area. There will be wild berry bushes that are thriving in conditions just like you have on your land, and that are the right size, appearance, and generally suit your needs. Figure out what these plants are, and that will give you good ideas what to plant. Around here, Gray Dogwood, Elderberry, Blackhaw Viburnum all grow well in drier spots, while REd Osier Dogwood, Arrowwood viburnum, and Winterberry Holly are a few berry plants found in wetter spots. You'll probably have a different mix of species, but I'd try to figure out what does well in your area and grow those. it will make you life a lot easier and make you look like a good gardener without really trying.

mimosa. Hate those things. I cut the ones I find down and then in the fall I drill large diameter holes in the trunk and pour salt in the holes. It works pretty good on the smaller ones. I may try the brush b gone. I've used it on old growth Ivy before and it worked. Took a couple of applications but it got there.
