Our 1st snowstorm of the season in SE Wisconsin

Looks like we're getting our 1st snowstorm of the season. Right now (4am) it's snowing and the wind is really howling out there. Everything's turning white. We can expect up to 10" when it's all done. We have a storm warning until 3pm Friday. I leave for work at 1:30 pm so I hope the roads will be pretty well taken care of by then. We're going to have some really cold nites ahead too. Lows in the teens. So I'm glad we're having this snow to protect the plants. Luckily I got the outside Xmas decorations up when we had the nice weather. Now I just have to get the rest of the inside decorations up.

The papers say this was the first blizzard in seven years. I've looked everyware to buy salt for my walkways and every place is OUT.

I went to the gorcery store today and all the shelves were bare. I don't know if it was because the delivery trucks couldn't make it out to the stores or people panicked and stocked up. There was no bread, just a couple of packages of hot dog buns. The meat counter was bare and practically empty. Fruits and Veggies were low. Even the canned and packaged goods on the shelves were sparse.

I haven't seen this happen since the "Blizzard of '79".

At least now my neighbor's holiday lights look nice against the snow. The past years I felt sorry for all the plastic snowmen and Santas sitting on brown grass all winter.

We got a little under 12" for this storm. I'm glad we got that much because of the really cold weather we've been having. It's helping my plants.
We have salt left over from last year so didn't notice if there was a shortage. Hubby and I bought plenty of food before the storm so I don't know if our store was affected. I do remember in past years where there were big storms in the forecast and everyone went crazy buying food! LOL!
I remember one December in the late 1990's that we had 48 or 49" of snow for that one month. It snowed every day except 4 days during that month. After December we didn't get anymore snow until the next winter. Really weird. Of course that snow hung around a good long time!
Now it looks like we're going to lose some of the snow we just got. It looks like it's going to hit 40 on Monday and Tuesday. I can handle that. :)

Hi Will: I have a large hole in the ice covering my pond from the bubbler. It has been above 32Â° for a while now so the hole is getting bigger every day. We had 50Â° a few days where the ice melted completely, but I can't see my fish for the algae :( I am planning on buying a few bunches of watercress at the grocery store this weekend. Hopefully I can jump start it in my sunroom before the weather warms up. Someone here on the forum said their watercress made it through the winter so I'm just going to toss some in and see what happens. Maybe it'll take off before the fish wake up and I will have watercress in my pond this year. lol Jenny

Tom, it does indeed sound like rhizosphaera needlecast you've got there. A tree so infected can be helped somewhat by: Removing badly infected limbs and removing them from the area, burning them, or some other disposition that removes their ability to reinfect more foliage, and by attending to the basic needs of the infected tree, especially with regards to adequate soil moisture. This latter is especially important when the tree is sited in heavy clay-based soil that gets very hard and dry at some point during the growing season. A treatment called 'vertical mulching' can also be helpful although it's no simple treatment. Basically trenches are dug down through the tree's root zone somewhat like spokes from a wheel hub, and a lighter, more porous mixture of sand and compost, or similar materials are used for backfill. Beyond that, you're getting into fungicides, particularly chlorothalanil-based products. Should you like more comments on that end of things, let us know. FWIW, this disease has been raging out of control here and down by you in the last few years. There seems too to be a complex of possible other pathogens at work recently on spruce. In all cases, blue spruce is heavily attacked. Great trees for sure, it is a shame that this is becoming so prevalent. Also FWIW, Norway spruce seems least affected........so far. +oM

We had 13.7 inches here in Racine. I don't mind the shoveling as much as figuring out where to put the stuff! And we are supposed to get some more snow starting tonight, 3 to 5 inches, not bad. But I am running out of places to deposit it. I live on a corner lot and there isn't much of a lawn in front of the house. Just about 3 feet of grass between the sidewalk and the bushes around the foundation. The strip between the street and the sidewalk is pretty high plus with this freezing cold it is hard so the snow that I try to put up there will most likely just slide off. I might have to put the snow in a toboggan and move it around the corner and put it on my side lawn which has a little bit of room. The worst thing of all is that my street is usually plowed after I finish shoveling and that $%^* plow always dumps a mess in the end of my driveway! They swerve around my neighbor's car (who parks in the street) and when they come back over to the side of the road they always push a bunch of snow into my driveway before they straighten out. I asked my neighbor to park on the other side of my driveway but he must have forgot. So I saw him the other day parking his car and explained again and he said he would do it the next time it snowed. I guess I'll have to hope he remembers tonight. Wish me luck. I have an red Amaryllis blooming right now and it is very inspiring to see that in front of the window before my gaze travels past it and sees all of that white snow everywhere. Don't you wish you were like those bears and other animals who hibernate through winter? I know I wish I could just sleep through it all! Kim

Thanks Sharon! I am very pleased with how all the colors I've put in seem to go together. When I pick a new rose I generally wander around High Country Roses comparing the color with other roses I have. If it clashes I put it back. Matt thinks I spend more time than others selecting my roses and sort of ribs me about it. I also find having the singles and the mini's make a nice contrast to the many petaled roses. I've got some that weren't in bloom right now so looking forward to a spring flush when I can see all the roses together. I decided to start growing roses as I couldn't find any other spring to fall color flowers and am pleased with how it is working out.

Well you folks went and did it. You talk about this early snow storm and the rest of the month here ends up resembling Florida more than Wisconsin.

Not complaining, but my kid wants to go sledding and I prefer he sled in snow rather than mud.

Somebody complain about the warm, wet weather so we get a cold snap.

Oh, wait, I just did.

Get those snow blowers gassed up folks, the big one is coming now!

Well, I don't think it's quite like Florida. My older brother lives near Ocala Fl., and I talked to him on Christmas. He said it was 75. I think the weather's been great so far. Our lawn is nice and green yet. :) I do have to say, a beautiful snow fall where the snow sticks to the trees is a sight to see. But I can do without if the temps stay in the 30's or higher.
