fallen leaves

This may be a very silly concern, but I'm new to all this, so I have to ask. I have a ton of leaves that have fallen into my flower gardens. I've read that it's best to get rid of the leaves (raking, blowing, etc) because little critters like to nest in them. Plus the large mat of leaves may keep water from percolating into the ground as quickly. It was suggested to mulch the leaves and replace after the ground freezes, or maybe after the first frost. Anyway, this seems to be a lot of work. I did some mulching last night and the winds came in and just blew more in!!! Is it really necessary? I'm assuming it's probably not a huge deal to leave things as they are, but I don't want to kill my newly inherited gardens!!
