trouble with pulp in saving seeds

I've done an adequate amount of research about saving tomato seeds, but I'm running into trouble on my first attempt. I scooped out the seed and pulp, put it in a glass, covered it with a paper towel, and set aside for a few days; after the first day I realized I should have added some water, so I did, and set aside for another two days. When I went to wash off the seeds, I found that the pulpy coating would (to my great irritation)cling to each seeds; I tried spraying with a concentrated stream of water and washing many, many times, but I couldn't get the pulp to come off. So I put them BACK in the jar, added some more water, waited a day, and tried again - no luck. What am I doing wrong? I assume they are supposed to be completely clean when I dry and store them. Thanks...
