2 4 D drift

I have weird curled leaves and deformed growth on my tomatoes eggplant and peppers. I had sprayed the yard with weed b gon then used the clippings (not thinking) a couple weeks later to control weeds around the plants. I replaced the tomatoes a couple of weeks ago and now notice the new growth doing the same thing. Any suggestions on how to save the plants? I removed the grass clippings prior to the re-plant. Help!

The chemicals have washed off the clippings and into the soil. I'd start a new garden elsewhere.

To reduce growth deformation, try spraying the plants (especially the leaf bottoms) with 3 tbs/gal calcium nitrate plus a non-ionic surfactant such as Triton X-100, 1/2 tsp/gal.

Yes, I have sprayed this on my daylilies. It's not for the faint hearted. Early in the spring it will make the foliage somewhat twist sideways and will scare you to death that you've done something very, very wrong. In about 2-3 weeks they grow out of it and you can't tell there was anything different about them. DO NOT spray when the plants are forming scapes. If you do they will twist and corkscrew. I also wouldn't spray around any plant that is stressed. Don't know that it would hurt it but if the plant is already stressed why stress it more. I use 1 ounce per gallon of water. I also use some detergent as a surfactant if I don't have any. DO NOT use Dawn bacterial liquid. I've heard the outcome is not good. Also--BE CAREFUL of spray drift. That's part of the reason you'll want a surfactant. This spray I don't think is as volutile as it used to be but you don't want to spray and find out you've killed something 4-5 ft. or more downwind from where you're spraying. Hope I haven't scared you to death but I want to make you aware of the possibilities if you choose to use it.

I'm not in the midwest but it's been hot as hell here too for the past week. Some of my plants had irreversible wilt at their tops, like i've never seen before. Just dried up dead. I was worried it was a disease but i had them covered the next day and all the covered ones are fine (i did miss a couple :( ). That is when i figured it had to have something to do with the new growth not having been "hardened off" or used to this kind of baking. On the aphid front, i've had to resort to insecticide. They are really bad and i waited long enough for ladybugs to appear. Last year i didn't see a single aphid on my toms and the place was crawling with ladybugs. I don't know what gives.

Thanks rhizo! But, as I recall, the shelf-life of those concentrates could be anywhere from 2 to 8 years. shelf-life...that is the term I couldn't remember, thus couldn't research it very well. Cool, dark, and dry pretty much sums it up. Yes, has been stored well. Ok, in doing some more searching using 'shelf life' I found where the question was asked on another site and a Consumer Response Representative from The Scotts Company and replied. He said: Roundup Weed & Grass Killer Concentrate has a shelf life of a minimum of eight years. The product may last beyond the minimum time period though. Many variables in storage conditions can affect the shelf life of a product. Roundup Weed & Grass Killer Concentrate will not be fully effective one day and ineffective the next; the product will gradually lose its effectiveness over time. Store both unopened and opened product containers in a cool, dry place and protect them from extremes in temperature. Freezing temperatures, for example, won't affect the product, but may cause damage to the container and could result in a chemical spill. Stored correctly, your product will last at least the minimum number of years and probably longer. ------------------------------------------- It's a good policy for all of us to purchase only the amount of certain products that we are reasonably sure we'll use in one year. Going forward, when purchasing I'll consider a smaller container, or else maybe opt to split it with a neighbor who also has a high usage every year. Thank you again. Sue

I'm wondering why there would be 2,4-D residue on these leaves in the first place. If you collected the fallen leaves months afterwards, how would 2,4-D get on them if they were on the trees when it was applied? Yes, it could volatilize/drift up into the trees, but that could happen if anyone within 1/4 mile sprayed and you would never know. 2,4-D is one of the least persistent herbicides, it degrades in most soils within a month to almost undetectable levels. It's half-life is very short. The general recommendation is to wait at least 7 days after a 2,4-D spray directly to the soil before seeding that same area....since it can temporarily reduce germination. I wouldn't be concerned at all if I were in your situation, but you can worry if that's what you like to do.

The plants are moving poison all throughout the plant.

Personally I would pull up all the plants and throw them away off my property. of course this simply spreads the poison all over the world. Stop using poisons and pesticides. Learn to go Organic.

Why do you use poisons. Do you want to die early of cancer. Do you want to kill your wife and children.

You can not kill life on earth without killing yourself.

If you poison your garden then you poison your self and your family.

What is there about Organic you do not understand. There is an Organic forum here on garden web.

Who wants to eat poisoned tomatoes that will give them cancer later in life. You, your wife, your children ???

Not me that is for sure. I have been growing for over 40 years without a drop of any poison. My garden grows like crazy. big huge no watering no fertilizing all natural huge crops no bug problems no chemical fertilizers.

My part of NC has just finished (?) a horrific three-year drought. We were in the worst category of drought last year, and it looked like we'd just stay there permanently.

But this spring it rained. And rained. And rained so much that NOAA actually shifted us five drought categories into "normal," something we'd thought we'd never see again. But it was brief. Now we are again "abnormally dry." Admittedly, at the moment we're only waiting a week or two between rainstorms -- infinitely better than the four-to-six-weeks it was last summer, but ...

... just take it from me that most places can't forego watering -- not if they want a harvest.

And be glad I responded politely.

I agree with missingtheobvious. Watering is a necessary part of most gardens.

Also, gardendawgie, try to write in a less inflammatory way next time.

What the F does watering have to do with 2,4-D drift?

The sublethal dose of 2,4-D in tomato plants is 0.42 to 13.44 g per hectare (10000 square meters ). If you figure 1 tomato plant per square meter, that's 0.042 to 1.344 mg. per plant.

You probably won't find any either struwwelpeter. I get quite tired of weeding through the sanctimonious posts trying to find useful information. It's either "ALL ORGANIC" or to quote gardendawgie, "Do you want to kill your wife and children"? Logic isn't there....it's all emotion.

So I trudge through the posts looking for gold nuggets of fact and useful information......
