Bugs or Birds Eating Apple Blossoms!?
Comments (1)It's the birds: The birds are eating your blossoms; I had this problem for many years--in some years, the birds ate more than 40% of the blossoms---, therefore, this year I decided to outsmart them. I used mylar foil as a reflective medium to scare the birds away...and it worked--they stopped eating my stone fruits blossoms....See MoreName that (apple eating) bug!
Comments (7)Thanks marknmt. Yeah, I sort of decided they weren't red-humped based on the pics. Whatever they are, they did damage. I had these same worms last year and they took off almost every leaf before I found them. This year I dusted with BT around the same time. They still showed up but there were far fewer. Maybe I need to dust more often and be more vigilant after rains, etc. Anyway, those brown-green caterpillars finished the job. I'll consider the other options. I mean to read up on Spinosad especially. Interestingly, one tree (a MacFree) seems to get caterpillars far more than the others. I've only found stray ones of any variety on the other trees but this one has gotten hammered two years in a row. Thanks again!...See MoreCatalpa Tree, good or bad? & How do I keep the caterpillars off?
Comments (28)This tree does fantastic in my area, the Northern species atleast. The catalpa worm does not range in my area and these trees are blemish-free all year up here. A Chinese species has been planted in the area with pronged leaves and is seeding slightly, as evidence by the young trees around, but those small plants donÂt survive a really dry summer usually, but there are atleast 3 juvenile plants that are 15 feet tall now. Mature plants are very hardy here. Also pretty, but I prefer the northern....See MoreCrab Apple has full of little bugs & sick coreopsis
Comments (5)And, those that aren't crushed by the stream of water usually don't find their way back up onto plants once on the ground. They multiply so quickly, keep spraying them off until you see your first ladybug of the season - aphids are their favorite food and their larvae (look a little like mini alligators) will consume even more....See Moreled_zep_rules
