Basic Creeping Phlox questions
Comments (4)It crowds like CRAZY. It grew up, inside and over the outside of a pine bush for me last year. It didn't kill it, but boy that felt aggressive for me. It's not terrible to cut back, but honestly a find a sharp shovel to be way easier. I just dig it. That way I get a nice clear edge line. I pretty much do this every spring or I fall behind and regret it. That being said, once a year with a shovel isn't too bad. I like the look both green and flowering....See MoreI have a garden site that is driving me crazy!
Comments (6)Never throw in the towel! I think gardens are better than grass. So I think you will have to try to identify what might be a problem in that bed. First, is there any connection between willow bark/roots and plant death? If my computer was working faster today I'd google it for you. I've never heard of that but I think black walnut trees are known for that. More likely is going to be poor drainage, too much hot sun like a western exposure for new plantings, which means they'd need more water their first 2 yrs. Again, not enough water could be a factor in any case. I'm thinking this becoz the sedum are the ones doing best. What about the compost? Is it too fresh, not aged enough? Is it from somewhere that might have some adverse chemical in it? Did you apply a layer of mulch? If the site is very sunny and somewhat dry, or you can't water it much or can't get a hose out there, then plant herbs and yarrow and other such plants. Good luck. Laurie...See Morecreeping phlox
Comments (4)I tried and tried and tried and just don't have good results either. The front edge of my property slopes down toward the street, and my driveway goes right through the middle of the yard, so there is a sloped area on either side of the drive along the road. On one side, I tried for three, maybe four years to establish pink creeping phlox. I finally gave up and planted sedum John Creech. On the other side, I have a bulb bed that I surrounded with blue creeping phlox. This has been more successful, although I still have to work at it. Funny thing is, someone else once posted and agreed with me that she had the same problem with pink phlox, and better luck with the blue! Go figure. Mine is in hot, dry sun in the afternoon, shade in the am. I think I need to water more consistently. I also found that bigger, more established plants did better there than the little Bluestone plants I tried there (nothing against Bluestone - I use them for almost everything in my garden). What are the light conditions in the area? If the manure was bagged, it shouldn't have been too hot. Was it fresh? Do you water often enough? Any kids or animals that might be walking on the edge of the RR ties and perhaps damaging them? :) Dee...See MoreWhich phlox is deep purple?
Comments (3)I have a lovely medium height purple. Somewhere between the beautiful tall ones (like David) and the creeping magenta, light purple glowing right now in the spring. This is about 6" tall and nice. Want some? Are you near Columbus?...See Morebotann
