4th of July Winner is SunGold

I just now ate my first ever SunGold tomato from my first ever SunGold plant and was shocked how good it was. WOW is all I can say. Today is 4th of July and I spotted 3 cherry toms on the one plant deep down in the bush called a plant. I picked the 3 as a celebration and passed them out. I was totally shocked by how wonderfully sweet flavored it was. not just sweet but sweet with great flavor.

I am up in New England zone 5 and it is hard to get a tomato so early. Now a cherry is small but they were ripe.

I have also been shocked by what a strong growing plant the SunGold truely is. It is very strong growing with lots of branches. and lots of flowers. I expect to have a good harvest of sungold this year. I also have 6 other plants that I seeded a little later but they are moving right along also.

This will definitely become a favorite of mine if they continue to have such great flavor. Better than most big tomatoes. But then I only tried one. It is very dry out there this year. that might be having a strong effect. I like salads and expect this to work well in a salad bowl. I am looking forward to trying them in a salad.

I am really glad now that I have 6 more plants coming along. I wish I had grown this is previous years. It is definitely the best cherry tomato I ever ate.

It was not red and looked too early to pick. it was orange. one had a little split on top. I normally would have waited longer to pick but because it was the 4th of july I wanted to celebrate the day. I now suspect from the great taste that I picked it just right. It was orange with some yellow on top. I will get more practice later when hopefully I can pick a bunch at the same time.

Oooh, this makes me excited! I am also trying out my first SunGolds this year. I got the plants from my Grandma, who grows them every year, and swears they are the tasiest cherry tomato. I tried picking the first two this morning, but after biting into it, realized they were not quite ripe (still a bit green inside). They were dark yellow, but I think I need to let them get a little more orange before picking. Now I wish I would have just waited a day or two longer...

yes I have to learn how to pick them also. But wow the flavor just blew me away and I am used to the best tasting tomatoes so I am very fussy. Sungold is a super winner. I am glad I have more seeds for next year.

I also got one of these. So far mine has been clean, but it has only had one spray of flowers, and none of them have been over 1 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. The color is good, again a wine to purple color with variable white striping. I hope it improves. I know it takes climbers a while. It also may not like our heat and high humidity this year or the ground it is in. Don't know yet.

Jaune Flamme performs well in my garden. We grew it last year. Thinking about growing it again this year. It works/looks great in a colorful box mix. Our latest always under revision small fruit list includes: Jaune Flamme, Pink Ping Pong, Dark Galaxy, Kiss the Sky, Butter Apple and 4th of July. We're trying Napa Chardonnay and Brad's Atomic Grape this year too. I totally agree with the Sun Gold assessments. It's a love/hate relationship. We've decided to give Sun Gold/Sun Sugar a break this year and will not be growing them. Some of the small varieties we grew last year were Blush, Purple Bumble Bee, Green Zebra Cherry, Kazachka, Cosmic Eclipse, Jaune Flamme, Ron's Carbon Copy, Chocolate Sprinkles, Painted Pink, Black Cherry, Sun Sugar and Sun Gold. The clear winners were Kazachka, Painted Pink and Jaune Flamme. We haven't tried Esterina nor Orange Paruche but would like too. The feedback seems good for both. The seed swaps are done for now but the start list still seems to get modified daily. The countdown has started for us. 4 weeks until we start seeds. Shell

Went to a friend's house for a barbecue 4th - wasn't sure what to expect because they're vegetarians (but not vegans, thank goodness - I have a hard time cooking for vegans). But they did barbecue some hamburgers for meat-eaters like us. But mostly it was vegetarian, and quite delightful. Grilled radicchio, onions, zuchini, red peppers, mushrooms, and potatoes. Someone made a rice salad with corn and hard-boiled egg. One person (the household is French, with many friends gained through the local French-American school) made a wonderful tomato-nicoise olive tart, over a bed of sauteed onions, green peppers and celery. I made the spinach lasagne recipe from Cook's Illustrated May/June 2004 for the umpteenth time. It's always a winner with everyone, carnivore or vegetarian! Despite their insistence upon the "proper" cheeses, I cut down a bit of the fat by using skim-milk mozzarella. I also use McCormick's lemon pepper: less sodium and more taste. Then I riffed off a printed recipe for a rice-garbanzo bean salad by changing it to a rotini pasta-white bean salad. I added cooked carrots for color in addition to the green beans called for, and adjusted the seasonings in the mustard-lemon vinaigrette to taste. This one the vegans could eat! Then I added some lemon cheesecake bar cookies, which turned out to be totally unnecessary as several people just stopped by bakeries to buy something to bring along. We ended up with ten desserts for 25 people! Never even made it to the peach pie....

My 4th of July winner is my Bradley plant. It's the only plant out of around 35 that had a ripe one. The rest of them have tomatoes, but they're not ready yet. Good luck with your other plants!

I forget who said that out of all the cherry tomatoes SunGold had the most complex, sweet flavor and that they wanted to do a growout to creat an OP form, maybe it was Craig. I really can't remember who said it so please forgive any error of information.

I know how you feel--sun golds really are amazingly delicious--yummy! they are vigorous and prolific. they are the only cherry tomatoes that I grow now. last year I had also grown sweet golds, which stay yellow (they don't turn orange) and the fruits grow bigger than sun golds, but the sweet gold fruits cracked regularly and didn't taste nearly as good as the sun golds. I'm bummed because I'm still days away from getting ripe ones, but I can live vicarious through the rest of you for now!

You folks in Zones 5&6 are eating ripe tomatoes. I'm in Zone 8(PNW) and planted my tomatoes in early May and I just have a few small greenies.

I'm so envious. I got a SunGold sucker from Craig and it's now just started to flower. It's only been in the ground for about a week. I'm tempted to pinch the flower to let the plant grow out more, but I can't wait, so I'm letting it go!

Sungold was first for me as well, ate the first few on June 30 (I am North of Toronto). Plant is covered in stems and flowers. Ate while bright yellow...should have waited a few more days (flavour was tart and intense). Some yellow pears or black cherries might be next, and a few of my large tomatoes are already the size of a fist, but I think they need a few more weeks.

koreyk I gave up on cherry tomatoes (too many by the end of the season) but I have to say, ripe tomatoes 4th of July is very impressive. Congratulations

kubota this is not only the first year for SunGold but the first year for cherry tomatoes. I dont like cherry tomatoes and never grew them. But I am impressed by SunGold. The explosion of flavor in my mouth was really impressive.

I am thinking of crossing this with a beefsteak to get a huge one with this flavor. probably will not work. never know might get a middle sized one with great flavor. I think the people doing scientific breeding should look into what makes the flavor so good and try to get it into the store junk. haha.

That would be very interesting. Maybe you can try with an Orange Cherry it's OP and supposedly similar in taste to SunGold which is a Hybrid with X number of parents.

First time SunGold grower here too. Wow! What taste! Hybrid vigor and very productive. Tried my very first one about three weeks ago. Had my first sioux last week. Bloody Butcher coming in nicely, but both sioux and sungold beat it for earliness this year.

How did the sioux taste. is there a difference between sioux and super sioux or are they the same with different names.
