I just checked and I planted everything 7/22. I also checked the GrowGuide from chestnut-sw.com and using 10/2 as a first frost date, this week is time to plant...tada..Spinach! (Sick of it yet?) Ongoing (that means a week behind schedule but still ok to plant) is: beets kale kohlrabi mustard greens radishes swiss chard turnips Peas, unfortunately, the last chance was around the last week of July. Changing the frost date to 10/6, it says new this week is radishes, and last chance for starting carrots (outdoors of course) and leaf lettuce (starting seeds indoors; the week of 8/11 is the last chance.) It's been a weird weather year so you never know what the weather will be like in 6 weeks. Hope this helps. Mark

Al, you plant your cover crop in November??? Are you planting an annual or perennial cover crop? I am going with annual which is why I was scared I was running out of time. Thanks. MM

I did this one year. Cut your plants down to about 4 inches. They will send out new growth. Throw the bug eaten parts you cut off in the garbage (in a bag to help suffocat them and so they won't escape!). That is the only way you will be able to have some more beans. It is getting too late to plant a fall crop. Also, keep in mind, late crops are usually eaten by bugs. So, you might want to spray for bugs now that you are starting over with these plants. You could probably use a row cover immediately after you spray the plants. I'll leave it to you what you spray your beans with. I'm an organic grower. I usually tear the plants out and re-plant or cut them back and try to get another crop (based on how late in the growing season it is). Your only option would be to cut the plants back and let them bush back out.

I know it's a bit late for a follow-up on my rye/vetch cover crop I planted in Nov. 2015 but thought I should mention that very few seeds germinated so I guess I didn't seed early enough. I just planted the exact same seeds in the same place about 10 days ago and only a few 4" shoots of rye are showing. Looks like something has been digging around in the beds and are disturbing the seeds. Don't know if it's a squirrel or maybe the local cats. Hopefully more seedlings will start to show up. Anyone else in PNW planting cover crops yet and if so could you share your insights? By the way, the bed that I planted the cover crop in does not get any direct sun past about 2pm. Do hairy vetch need lots of light to grow? Harry
