Anyone have Hummingbirds?

I guess the hummingbirds have been here since early May but I haven't seen one yet. Has anyone else sighted any hummingbirds?

I saw one fly through the yard a couple of weeks ago.

I've seen a few on my honeysuckles. They also seem to like my annual geraniums (but not a one at my hummer feeder!)

Troyers, the squirrels didn't bother mine either for the first couple of years. And it really depends on how & where you have it hanging. Mine is on a shepherd's hook type thing. It's away from an area where the squirrels could jump to it, but I've watched them climb the pole. Last year I put vaseline on it for a while and that helped, but it's messy. Every day I have to put the plastic flowers back in. I'm probably going to have to move it and perhaps hang it on the porch, but I didn't really want to get it too close to the house as we've occasionally had some bird strikes on our french doors on the porch.

Kristy, I know how you feel..I had to fence in my flower beds, one bed has 2.5' and others have 4'. Our puppy is such a digger. DH does NOT like the look of the fences. He was b1tchin yesterday, "why have flowers if you have to fence them and make it look like crap"..but I quoted it nicer than he said it, lol. I'm hoping once she listens better I can take them down..I hate it too. Nice pix. She just was tellin ya she wanted to go fishin, lol. Ya know, I have never seen a hummingbird in this yard. I plan on building bat houses this year, and putting up HB feeders. MIL lives a few houses away, and she claims she has had them in her yard..so what do they have against mine?? Do you think maybe they dont come cuz my yard is always so busy w/us always being outside, and looney kids & animals runnin around?

TY! Yes, one of the Hamelias . A Monarch and a Gulf Fritillary nectaring side by side. I have several different firebush plants through-out the garden. As for feeders, I keep feeders on hand and only put them out when after I see a hummer. I keep them clean , replacing small amount of sugar syrup every other day in hopes it may be just the extra encouragement too keep hummers in the garden. The one year we did have hummers nesting, they were so illusive, we only saw the male once, the female once, then suddenly there were babies :) I never did see any of them use the feeders :( Luckily, the babies followed a schedule, feeding on flowers every few hours. :) We found the nest months later blown onto the ground in a storm. As soon as the male babies started to develop their ruby colouring, they all departed. I wish I had videoed them, but at the time, had my hands full with my own babies :)

mrbrownthumb: I think you were maybe seeing a goldfinch? The females can look a sort of grey/olive color compared to the males (who, in summer, look like they are wearing little sunglasses). They love to pick the seeds out of flowerheads. I don't cut my dead garden stuff back until spring because the birds pick seeds out of the coneflowers, etc., all winter. This year I had a goldfinch couple who would eat all the seeds out of my sunflowers. They would perch on the back of the sunflower head and rip off all the top petals so they could lean over and get the seeds more easily. It made all my sunflower look like they had beards, since they were all bald on top with petals only on the bottom. (I'd been blaming the squirrels until I caught a goldfinch in the act of denuding my sunflowers.) I still have hummers coming by--haven't seen one yet this morning, but I saw a fat one yesterday, buzzing around the pineapple sage. Also saw our first junco of the year incredibly early--a female on Oct. 7th. Usually we don't see the juncos until November sometime--she must have been on her way further north. All day long they are enjoying our columbine and other plants (plus the feeder we put out for them)

We have them galore. The little buggers are fighting all the time over whose feeder it is. They even fly though the mist as I water the garden. Had one land on me as a matter of fact. It was quite a treat.

The last 3 weeks or so, they've been in our delphinium quite a bit.

I bought some Alstroemerias at Jung in a hanging basket in the beginning of June. Since I've put them out on my front porch I've proabably seen this same hummingbird about 4 or 5 times on different occasions. Not sure of the variety and its entireley possible that is a different bird but they flit away so darn fast I don't get a chance to get a solid look. And go figure my DSLR is ALWAYS just out of reach when they little guy shows up!

Somebody needs to TRAIN these birds... :)

Couple yrs back they'd come onto our 2nd story deck and feed with us sitting quietly within 4-6'. A few times those birds would come with a few feet of us.. what a thrill.. one of the great perks of summer & the work of making flower beds.

This season in particular the birds are wary.... seldom staying on the deck area when we're present. It got better as the summer wound down.. yet few 'close encounters of the H kind' as I label them.

A TRAINER.......... I am considering some kind of manikin/s to leave on the deck. Possibly one in the bad flower beds.. to get them used to the shape. Anyone tried or considered such an idea?

My BEST enounter of the 'H kind' was out in my daylily bed one morn. I was motionless reading a chart when a whirrrr went by me at around 2'... That hummer stopping around 12' away to feed. After a good long half minute of sipping nectar.. this one came BACK and eye-balled me.. at around 3-4'.... flying a tight pattern from side to side... giving me a good going over. This lasted say 8-10 seconds.. what a rush.. just COOL. And off she went.. a she for sure per markings.

The Lady of our house LOVES hummers.. it has rubbed off!
