Do I or should I trim my berrybeauty tree?

The tree has low limbs on the ground and I'm wondering if I should try trimming it up.

I hate to do anything that would rune the looks of the tree and not being experienced in this field it could happen.

Hey Barb, I have just a small one, but I noticed today that it has started blooming. If you can stand the way it looks until then, I would wait until after the birds have eaten the berries off of it this coming winter. If you can't wait, I don't think it would harm the shrub if you limbed it up. You would just have fewer berries.

Kristi you have a very good point. I didn't think about that, Thank you so much for keeping me in line LOL poor birds need those berries.

If this was my plant I would leave it alone it's beautiful :) it does need a bigger pot tho. Make sure you replant it in a fast draining soil. I love when these guys get huge! If you have the room I would let it grow. If you wanna prune your plant make sure to protect your skin and eyes. When propagating the plant put the cuttings under running cool water to stop the plant from oozing that toxic sap. Put the cuttings in a dark cool place to callous over. When they are calloused over you can plant. Good luck:)

The new growth isn't likely to die....rather, the new growth would be skinny and lanky, and you'd just have to prune it off next Spring. That said, I'd be very tempted to prune the tree, personally....but that's from northern California, where I'll have my trees outside during good weather, well into December. For now, I'd start by staking the tree loosely. This will allow it more access to sunlight when it is placed in front of a window. Josh

I don't have any personal experience with 'Jack', but if it is like the other cultivars of of P.c. it will develop the form it is genetically programed to, whatever that shape is. What has been suggested is a little early corrective pruning. Not all cultivars are symmetrical. If you are interested in a smaller pear, you might want to look for the cultivar 'Westwood', which is a calleryana x betulifera hybrid. It grows fast while young but greatly slows down with time. The foliage is smaller and finer than the callery cultivars, expands in spring with a silvery-purplish color and turns similarly to 'Bradford' in fall with maybe more purple. Habit is very architectural and open, with much wider branching angles. I don't believe it will be nearly as prone to self destruction as are the others.

An image will provide a good idea of what you are dealing with. I assume the branches are flexible. if so, pull them down a bit and weigh them so they hold their position, just as is done to train young fruit trees. I LOVE Beautyberry! We bought this property 18 mos. ago & we have SEVEN! They're natives, and you can pretty much prune them any time without hurting the plant (but if you prune them now, you'll lose those berries.) OK, so you lose a few branches of berries to keep the plant looking nice. . . . What I do for shaping is during the winter, after they've lost all their leaves, I HACK them back to about 3 ft. in the center and tapered down to about 1 ft. on the outer perimeter.
