Ildi is not Ildi - any help ID'ing this variety?

My one Ildi plant hasn't come true to what I've read about the variety.

What I expected from Ildi was:

-Multiflora trait (like Riesentraube)

-Yellow grape-type fruit

What I got from this plant was:

-"Standard" cherry tomato truss - 5 to 6 fruit per truss, not even remotely similar in structure to Riesentraube or the photos I've seen of Ildi

-Red-orange large grape-shaped fruit, about 1.5 inches long (bigger than I expected)

Any ideas on what this variety actually might be? I suspect it was mislabeled, and not from stray seed. Maybe a cross, but I'm not sure. The two other Ildi plants that I gave to friends show the same characteristics as mine, and as far as I can tell, they are identical. So I'm gonna guess this is another variety, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me ID it.

So three Ildi plants not true.

What was the source of your seeds? If via trade there's no way to know unless you contact the person you traded with. If via puchased seeds if it's a wrong variety and possibly mislabelled you should be able to find something else they list that resembles it. And if purchased you could also contact the seed seller and ask.

You mention a possible cross? I'd start with your seed sources first and then we can go forward if that doesn't pan out.

But once a variety has lost its label/name it's impossible to ID a variety just from pictures, with very few exceptions.

I got the seed from Tomatobob.com. Will check their site for look-alikes and see if I can find anything. Thanks

"pimples" nicely describes your tomato's root initials. Those are commonly seen with conditions of high humidity or stress. To clarify the term "canker" -- that means the plant has a dead, sunken spot.

I doubt you will find anyone with any Sungold seeds to trade or give away. Since they are a hybrid you can't save seed from them, so any seed anyone had they would have had to buy, and Sungold seed is expensive plus they usually give a smaller than usual amount of seeds in a hybrid pack, sometimes as small as ten to 18 seeds, so not many people would have any excess. I looked on the tomato seed saver exchange and Sungold was the most requested variety, and probably for the reasons I just stated.

Snowbird from Burpee's description grows to 18" which is shorter than most dwarf peas (any var. which grows up to 3' is called dwarf to distinguish them from talls like Alderman and Sugar Snap which reach 6' or more), so at this point I'd lean toward your shorter pea plants as being the Snowbirds.

not 100% sure - I can't remember if I I bought it from David austins or palatine roses ?? I thought it was from David Austin bc I had it in their signature green pots. Very sadly, I threw it out bc it stayed riddled w/fungus, always had no leaves & was a very weak grower- I'll b purchasing more David Austin roses this fall- going to buy mostly his red varieties bc they're so gorgeous & im lacking his red roses :) thanks guys!

When you've narrowed down the possibilities, you can check Vent Marin / Passion Tomate, which usually gives the number of sepals, truss size, plant height, and fruit weight. The good news: it's a huge database. The bad news: it's in French -- however, if you ever studied French it's fairly easy to figure out what's going on.

Just remember:
2 1/2 cm. per inch
28 grams per ounce

Missing, no doubt Ventmarin is a great site, I use it often, but in this situation I do think that catman needs to look at the varieties offered at tomatobobs first.

And that's b/c there are so darn many look and walkalikes that unless the seed source doesn't have them and they don't fit, then I think it's impossible to ID a variety just by a picture and a description, in any language. Just my opinion having gone on many searches for others over the years. Sigh.

Carolyn, that's exactly what I meant: that once catman narrows down the possibilities at TomatoBob, some of the info at Vent marin (number of sepals and truss size in particular) might help him to eliminate some of his possibilities.

Couldn't find one that was close enough on Tomato Bob. The most similar variety I found was called "High Country" and a Google search revealed 0 info on this variety. And High Country is supposed to yield 3-4 ounce fruits and I think mine are less than 2 ounces each. Also it seems like it yields more than my mystery variety.

I'll check out the Vent Marin site...

Trust me catman, you can't ID a variety for sure from a picture and description at any site and that includes Ventmarin, b'c there are other sites. Once a variety gets seperated from its name there's no way back.

At this point I think the best way to go is to contact your seed source and explain the problem, send some pictures and ask for advice. That's the only way you're going have a chance of IDing what you have.

I did check the 2009 SSE Yearbook for an orange colored High Country and there was no listing.

When I Googled it there were two places selling seed for it and I've linked below to the one that had a picture.

I sure wouldn't let an oz or so deter me from considering that you might have received High Country seeds. And yields for the same variety grown in different places sure can vary.

Again, I think contacting your seed source is the best way to go. ( smile)
