super... lol... blame feels good .. lol .. i will go with this comment: I could understand if these trees were willows, cottonwoods, boxelder, or if there were obvious signs of decay, windthrow, etc. ==>>> but for acorns rattling off the house at harvest.. if i had to have any tree near the house.. it would be oak ... regardless ... the OP was about topping.. 100+ year old oaks ... and it is simply an esoteric debate ... lets pretend they are 100 feet tall .. riddle me this batman ... WHY DO THEY NEED TO BE 15 FEET FROM THE HOUSE ... had they been planted 20 or 30 feet away .. oh so long ago ... they would still shade the house .. and the surrounding lawn ... and when pieces fall off.. the weighted parts would.. presuming gravity is still in force.. fall to the ground.. and hopefully the part that hits the house ... would be significantly less dead weight ... anyway... OP.. if you want to gauge height.. go put a standard shovel.. which are mostly 6 feet ... against the trunk.. take your digital camera.. and keep stepping back until you can snap the whole tree ... and then use a ruler to multiply out the shovel scale to the whole ... i also doubt they are 100 feet tall.. a lot of oaks tend to start broadening out.. increasing canopy that way.. rather than going extremely high ... but who knows .. any chance at some pix of the situation???? ken

Unstained white oak is typically a yellow/amber color and red oak a little redder. The grain differences are typically as or more pronounced than the color differences; have your floors been treated to make them gray? Best advice is to finish some sample pieces of both in the intended way and see how they look next to each other before proceeding to the entire room.

salicaceae I realize this thread is five years old but hope it might pop back up on top. I have a similar situation with a 30 year old oak, but no one has mentioned how to stop it from infecting other trees. When i purchased this property 3 years ago, there was a maple that had obvious signs of illness: bracket fungus, mushrooms, exposed rotting wood. We had it removed earlier this year. Just months later, bracket fungus developed on the oak that was its neighbor 20 feet away. This tree had large mushrooms at its base in our first year here. This oak isn’t looking very healthy and i understand that it is already lost, just a matter if time. However… I have two more 30 year old oaks and 3 maples that I would like to protect from infestation. I am not interested in fighting nature, but if there is a preventative, I would like to give it a try. I thought the maple had been infected because there was heavy cover on its roots from nearby cedar, keeping the area wet. With the maple gone, and the cedars, it stays quite sunny, so i thought it would improve the fungus issues. I live in the Huntsville, AL area. No need to reiterate the need for certidied arborist. This theead has been quite educational on that point. I would appreciate input on what if anything can be done to prevent spread. Thank you.
