Good heirloom/OP replacements for Big Beef & Brandy Boy?
Comments (10)I'd love to see an open pollinated tomato that truly matches the characteristics and value of Big Beef. I'm betting there isn't one. Big Beef is pretty special with regard to production, disease resistance and flavor. If anyone really finds a head-to-head replacement, please holler out. None I've seen mentioned meet the challenge, in my opinion. An open pollinated replacement for Brandy Boy will be easier, I imagine. According to many reports right here at GW and other tomato haunts, Cowlicks Brandywine is a contender. I've not grown it yet. Anyone else who has maybe can chime in....See MoreBetter Boy vs Brandy Boy
Comments (55)My first year growing Brandy boys. I am more than willing to overlook the catfacing and cracking on these lovely beefsteaks. Most have been just under 1b. Tonight's dinner was just shy of the 2lb mark and really hit the spot in terms of flavor and texture. I like them sliced with unrefined sea salt. My daughter ate 1/4 slices like a pizza. This Whopper has been harvested shortly after summer solstice, which may help explain the size. Growing in Israel where climate is similar to zone 10. I like these way better than the famous and excellent sungold cherry tomatoes in the same row. Thin skin, refined flavor and beefy interior....See MoreBrandy Boy versus Brandywine et.al.
Comments (9)Thanks for the replies! FWIW: For several years, our local WalMart carried Burpee Seeds at very attractive prices. This year, they went with another vendor. Next year -- ?? But we are also lucky that Menards (like Lowes/H.D.) carries a very full line of Burpee seeds. 40% off the package prices everyday; "on sale" several times each season for ~25% off the already discounted prices. That means BB sells for about $1.12 a pack (on sale) from a printed price of $2.49. You don't get as many seeds -- maybe 15-20, but plenty for the typical hobbyist. So look around -- sure better than $4.95/pack + shipping. On the other side of the coin, my personal experience with germination of Burpee seeds has been excellent (rack or mail order). And these seed companies $$$ shipping prices irritate me as much as anyone, especially if all you want is a couple of packs of seeds that are sent USPS first class for a dollar or so! -WC...See MoreBrandy Boy Contest -2015
Comments (186)Lar - I don't fertilize the micro or 2" soil blocks at all. I don't fertilize until I have planted the 2" block into a larger container - then I fertilize weekly from that point on - with a liquid (mixed from a powder) 9-58-8 root and blooming fertilizer with iron. Do you fertilize the soil blocks? If so - what do you use? Nice looking Brandy Boys Socalgal! Yours look great also Antmary! We water from the bottom - the 3/4" soil blocks are set on a capillary mat in a tray - they don't break apart on us when we water them this way. We water the mat around the perimeter being careful to not pour water directly on the blocks. The 2" soil blocks are placed in a rack that is made to sit inside a Perma-Tray - We lift the rack with the 2" soil blocks out - place water in the perma-tray - then put the rack back in. The Blocks do not fall apart but we are careful to only put about a 1/2" water in the perm-tray so the blocks are not over watered. We move the 2" blocks to pots when the plants are ready....See Morefoose4string
