Sorry to inform you that all your plants will be dead soon. My deepest sympathies if you have Late Blight. Perhaps if he bought that fungicide a month or 2 ago and you sprayed it every 5-7 days between rains you'd have tomatoes to eat. Where are you?

Wow, drtomato. That was a little harsh. Plenty of people choose not to use chemicals (or buy conventional produce) and still have fantastic gardens.

And, yes, in this case her tomatoes will die. I personally would rather have the plants die than spray with fungicide, but that's me. But suggesting that she shouldn't garden because of that choice is a bit too much.

Like Korney, I am curious as to where you are, whimzzyme? Everyone around me has had horrible tomato (and pepper) problems this year, but mine are doing very well. I did some odd things at planting and I am wondering if the planting prep is helping or if I'm lucky and area is just blight-free.

Bella, thank you for confirming to me that I wasn't being overly sensitive to drtomato's comments...this is my first time to post in this forum and I was quite surprised that someone would make such harsh comments and ill assumptions without knowing any of my gardening background. Anyway, drtomato, I hope whatever has you such a state is resolved and your day gets brighter!

Unfortunately IF it is late blight (and we can only guess based on the info provided) then as the others have said your plants are likely lost already and short of spraying them in the hopes of slowing it down long enough for the fruit to ripen is all you can do.

It's a choice you have to make but one many have faced this year and opted for the fungicide spray vs. no tomatoes at all. Either way, just make sure your choice is an informed one rather than one based on an uninformed fear.

On the other hand, it may not even be late blight. But you can find out for sure by researching 'late blight' photos on the web and comparing them to your plants. You'll also find instructions on what you need to do with the plants to prevent further contamination of your soil (lots of posts here on late blight) and how to prevent the problem next year.

Also research for future reference, some of the organically accepted fungicides - there are several - and you'll very likely need one next year.

And to be fair recognize that drtomato did have one valid point (tho it could have been stated more tactfully) - all of your store-bought food is chemically treated so you have been eating it for years. Right or wrong, it is that fact that has convinced many of us who normally work hard to grow organically in the garden to resort to some of lesser toxic chems this year. ;)

Whimzzy, the East is all out of free veggie miracles this year. My reply was a little strong too, but this year here, "harsh" & "reality" seem to go together better than peas & carrots!

If it is late blight and you STILL haven't done anything about it yet, I think it may be too late. Can you post any pics? Late blight is almost unstoppable, but if by chance it is EARLY blight instead of LATE, it can be controlled with fungicides. Please post pics if you can.

I guess people have to decide what is more important to them--a season without tomatoes, potatoes & peppers, or doing anything possible to save this year's plants & harvest.

I sit here debating selling my old truck to get $450 worth of fungicides to possibly save 66 mostly heirloom tomatoes & some of my own varieties here that didn't get planted until mid-late June, another 50+ at a friend's house, plus 42 peppers and 2 tomatillos. This was pretty much my "All-Star" line-up out of 500+ maters & 100+ peppers--if I don't get to save seeds I probably will lose many varieties. And I lost about 175 of 265 onion plants and 3 Blacktail Mountain watermelon plants! Throw in family matters & it has definitely NOT been a good year!

To think, some of you are debating whether or not to use safe or widely approved fungicides--in a rare Late Blight year yet!

bella, I am in SE PA also, and I haven't seen any late blight either. So maybe this area isn't effected to the same extent that other areas in the NE are. But the season isn't over yet. Here's hoping it stays uneffected.

My tomatoes are dying also. The pepper plants have not been affected, yet. I don't know if it is the same thing however. My plants have been getting wilted leaves and then turn yellow and some of them look like the first frost has hit. I fertilize and dust but have never gotten into other chemicals. Can someone tell me the best one to use on my tomatoes . . . hoping it is not too late.
