It's going to take a while, Aviastar...the soil up there is extremely thin in many places, so it'll be a couple years probably before I can get it done. For now, I have:Dainty Bess and Mystery Peachy-pink HT right up close to Wland. I also stuck in an own-root Comtesse du Cayla that had out-grown it's pot; perhaps too strong of a colour, but maybe it'll blend in.I put Mrs. Sam clg about 4 meters away;hopefully this'll grow up with an ash tree.I think that's all for this year, unless I decide to plant out my own-root Pink Mermaid behind Wland; it's still kinda small, though. The plan for future years is:put in a peachy-pinkie climber/rambler opposite Mrs Sam (Paul Noel, Paul Transon, Meg...lots of choices),and maybe another such climber can go into the arms of a big wild rose that's already there, between Mrs Sam and Wland,or else perhaps this'd be the spot for the purple-leaved shrub.Lorapetalums do look beautiful, but I got the idea from Internet that they prefer acid soil, so I doubt they'd like my garden much.Cotinus,berberis and Physocarpus op. might be better choices, but there's a real good'un that I found, too: Sambucus niger Black Lace or Black Beauty!!!! Deciduous,but very beautiful, judging from the photos,and quite delicate-looking. Better yet, sambuca does grow wild in the woods around here, so that makes me think it might do well in my garden. I also found a purple-leaf weigela offered here in Italy... Then,in front of the climbers/ tall shrubs,I could put in the more graceful shrub-roses ; those with cascading habits; I'm thinking of Hybrid musks in particular, but maybe also Phyllis Bide, grown as a cascader...another Cornelia, say, and a Francesca...then, if it all seems to welcome a touch of contrast, maybe a dark pum-coloured rose...but for this year, we're at the tail end of planting season, and I've already put in more than 100 baby roses ,so I think I've probably already really over-extended myself! bart

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. Yes I have heard that Angel Face is susceptible to black spot, but it seems to do very well here in Perth - maybe because it is so hot and dry here? And we get many hours of warm sunshine in the day. Luckily, I picked mine up super-cheaply and they look extremely healthy (for now!) so I'll see how I go. If I have to shovel-prune them, it won't be too much money down the drain. I just love the blooms and the fragrance, so fingers crossed! I'm going to look up all the combinations everyone suggested, but they all sound great and in keeping with my theme. Thanks so much! When I get everything in, I'll have to post a couple of photos, to show you how it all worked out. I had a bad car accident 3 weeks ago, and my back is a bit sore, so I'm pacing myself - a couple of hours every two or three days. The planting is so rewarding, I'm really enjoying it. I've got a row of 9 standard Seductions, planted with John Clare. Catmint to go in front. I've got a row of Pittosporums (screenmaster) screening another low wall. In front are Windermere, Molineux, Abraham Darby (plus waiting on Leonardo Da Vinci), dwarf lavender, pink and white daisies, mauve nemesia. I've got a Pierre de Ronsard on a wall near my front gate, with a bed of small cottage plants in front (stocks, foxgloves, violets etc). I'm going to put a thornless climber up amongst my wisteria. I have an old bed with a couple of camellias, azaleas and a fuschia for a bit of winter colour. I'm getting 3 garden arches, and I will train over them Zephirine Drouhin, Kathleen Harrop and Lamarque. It's spring here now, so I'm hoping that by next spring and the one after, it will all be really established. Thanks again.

You might try a crossvine (not trumpet vine) and see how you like it. You can get modern varieties with Rose or Orange color. It should remain evergreen in your area and it has little grips that will suction to the brick, yet it is not structually invasive. It will pull away easily should you desire to remove it later on. It is fast growing, especially if you provide good quality soil in the planting hole. Beautiful blooms mid to late April that the hummers adore. I planted two varieties last summer, one a native and one called 'Dragon Lady' which has a deep rose bloom and am extremely pleased with their performance. Dragon Lady is covered with buds and I noticed the first one opening this morning. The native crossvine produces fewer buds but has a lovely bloom of yellow w/rose colored throat. Another good vine is the climbing hydrangea but I'm not certain how invasive the little grippers might be on brick and it is slow to get started. It isn't evergreen but does have lovely clear yellow fall color and interesting bark. You might also want the wall to be bare during winter days, so the sun could heat the brick. The only drawback with using vines in your situation is who will trim them when they reach the roof line? Mary

I think a wood coffee table would fit the feel of this space. Try to place the front ends of the Sofas' on your carpet. You might need a larger rug if you can afford it. And lamps on the sides of the Sofas. It depends what style you are going after. I would personally put a baluster style coffee table in driftwood grey or white/cream to tie in the Sofas and blue pillows to tie in the carpet.
