Volunteer tomato plants from the compost bin

Just noticed two small tomato plants in a flower bed I created this year. I used my own compost in the bed and am pretty sure the plants are volunteers from some seeds that didn't come up originally when I started them indoors. (I composted it all.)

It's heartbreaking to think of pulling them up, especially since they are heirloom Costulto seeds from Monticello! (A gift from my sister at Christmas.) But I can't leave them there, and it is probably unrealistic to try to transplant them considering how late in the year it is, but part of me wants to try it. What do you guys think?

I'm in Zone 5A.

I'd go for it. Perhaps you could plant them in pots so that you could bring them inside when you get a freeze. At the very least, you'd be able to save some seeds for next year!

I transferred a couple of volunteers from my Sungold onslaught of last year just this past week. Tthey seem to be thriving. Bloomed some flowers as well since the transplant. You should definitely do it. Sungolds are hybrids so these will be a real mystery tomato.

Always put any garden debris into your compost pile, along with any other organic matter you can get. Those Broccoli plants grew in your garden soil and took nutrients from that soil and if you compost them those nutrients will end up back in your soil, eventually. If you toss them out in your trash you will never get those nutreints back.

the op's orig question is "My tomato plants are starting to go one by one. Has anyone tried composting them? Are they good for the compost bin? " seems like a yes or no answer will do right? my executive summary there is this huge discussion about soil inoculation, disease supression and calls for documented scientific experiments. with links to here & there "A number of people that I correspond with in Ireland, France, New Zeland, Australia, Spain, Germany, all have solved plant disease problems in their soils by composting the diseased plants and putting that compost back into their soils." so one response is "As to the poster's original question I honestly don't know the proper answer." then in the same post goes on to say "I'm going to err on the side of not composting my tomato plants in a compost pile specifically intended for spreading in the veggie garden." in the very next sentence "I would not be surprised though if the composting process whether it be hot or cold does some how take care of diseases regardless." but you will not compost them? hmmm why not? is this lawyerese at its finest? or a run for politcal office? prob doesnt even realize just how contradicting these two statements really are so the people trying to help go away with hurt feelings but live ______ every after

Probably what you have are Fungus Gnats, wee fly like critters that hatch from a too wet soil with lots of organic matter. Most often people that use soilless potting mixes see these, but they can also be in a compost mix. The easiest means of control is to allow the soil to dry a bit more, but with tomatoes that can cause other problems if not monitored very closely. Here is a link that might be useful: Fungus Gnats

If you have room, go ahead and transplant. I always have dozens of volunteer toms, not from my compost piles, but just in the garden area. I do not compost weeds or tomato plants.

I often use them to fill in area where a spring tom plant got early blight or something similar.
