Full Sun Perennial for Clay Soil Garden

I am a novice gardener. I am looking for a perennial that will take direct, full sun for approx. 8 hours per day. The flower bed has clay soil. Last year we had zinnias and moss roses. They did not do too well. I planted begonias this year. They have been fried by the sun. I like flowers over the plant like varieties. Please advise what I should replace the begonias with. Oh, We have a row of boxwood shrubs in the back and a row of double knock out roses in the middle. I would like more color from a flower that grew no more than about 12" and that has blooms that will last through the summer. Thanks.
