Please ID this weed

General form: 4 to 6 inch tall weed clump.

Flowers yellow/white

Size of flowers - roughly a fingertip. (the size of a little finger's tip)

Leaves - regular (non-serrated) edge. ~ 1 inch in length.

Location: in a field of clover surrounded by woods.

Not sure if perennial - just saw it this year for the first time.

The stems are raspy or grabby - but not thorny.

Are you certain that the wirey stems are associated with those leaves?

I wish that you would post this in the Name This Plant forum. I believe it to be dodder, a parasitic plant, but would like the experts in that forum to look at it.

I fed the birds a lot this winter and I'm going to see this same thing, I'm sure, when it starts to warm up. If you don't want them pull them early because the larger they get the harder they are to pull. I always let a few grow but they pull out easily at this stage.

After looking through images for both, (wow are there a lot of both) I can't really say yes to either. I'll be waiting impatiently for it to bloom. Fortunately it's not in a bad spot so I can let it be.

They do eventually flower, so you want to pull them up before they make lots and lots of little mare's tail seeds. They some right up, so it's not too bad.

Well, I ended up taking it to the extension office and they said it was kochia. It's an annual, so I'm not sure if I should bother to pull them up to prevent seeding. The extension office said they already dropped many seeds, so maybe I'll just let them die over the winter.
