Mulching over Wandering Jew

Hello all you helpful people!

I have a large section which has Wandering Jew sneaking in from both my neighbours properties. I'm gradually restoring my section back to native forest, and have ground covers which I don't want to kill by spraying. I have tried spraying with Roundup on areas where I can spray, but to no avail. Other sprays which target WJ persist in the soil, so will most likely kill any native plants and harm animals foraging. My question is, if I cover the WJ with a thick layer of mulch, will I eventually kill it or am I dreaming???

I wish I could help, but alas I'm having problems with this pesky plant as well (see my post about 4 down from yours).

I manage to kill it with Roundup, but I'm slowly taking out all my St. Augustine along with it. I wonder if putting down a premergant like the corn gluten stuff would work to stop it from seeding, then we could slowly remove it by hand?

I wish there was a selective herbicide that would kill it. Or is there? If so, please let me know.

Hi Thurston,

I read your post, and very nearly posted this under yours but didn't want to hijack it. This weed is so frustrating!

I've thought of using a preemergent too, but my forest is just starting to self-regenerate, so that option is out for me :( I was hoping that someone may have had some success in keeping it smothered. Ah well, looks like I will have to get out the black plastic bags and spend this weekend pulling it out. We do have a spray in New Zealand that is aimed at horrible weeds like WJ, kikuyu and couch grasses, etc but I can't remember its name. I think it was Target, but I've read so many spray labels lately they've all merged into one!!! I'm heading back to the garden centre later today, so will find the name for you.

I periodically prune my Wandering Jew, and then root all the cuttings in the same pot. Some of those old stems will grow new leaves, too, which will make for a nice, full plant. Josh

In zone 7, you'll need to bring them in (I brought mine in about a week ago - when temps were close to 40Â°F over-night). The foliage burns and dies back readily with cold temps, and a good freeze will kill the roots in the container. Is there any way you could make/purchase a tiered plant rack? Could you hang them from the ceiling, near windows? Josh

No one has replied yet. My dad grows the purple jew in pots and in the ground as a summer annual. It is a vigorous grower, but also breaks off easily, so wouldn't think it would cause a problem with a larger plant. How has it grown for you? I would think purple jew needs water, water, water in Texas.

I planted Wandering Jew as ground cover in my front yard last year, At first it was growing strong, but then after applying a thin layer of mulch it stopped growing completely and the leaves turned a sort of light blondish lavender. I expected the vines to come through the mulch but they just remained below. Anyone else experienced this? Was mulching a bad move?
