I got permission from a Texan to come here

Just recently LSU's Cooperative Extension Service was doing some research near here and there was a delightful young man working with our guys. As it turned out this "youngster" was an Agriculture PHD from Texas A&M! He sure looked young. This extraordinary young man suggested I come here.

I want to plant a couple of Pomegranate trees but, the ones I ordered from California and Arizona never did set fruit. This "Doc" of y'alls was not surprised. He informed me that high humidity was most likely the reason. He said my best shot was to get plants from a tree along the Gulf Coast that had produced fruit in this humid environment.

It is not legal here for me to post in the "Texas Exchange" so, I figured with a "note from a teacher" y'all might invite me into this forum?

Chalmette, near N.O.? Yeah, it's a wee bit more humid down there than it is in CA or AZ. Those poor trees probably drowned through their leaves. Good luck looking around here, I'm in one of those draught areas so we haven't anything that I can help you with.

Of course you are welcome here. Some of us may not be able to give any advice as our climates are so different, but others may be similar. I live in North Texas, and even though it feels like a rain forest here at the present time, it is usually very dry.

Josh, this is wonderful news. Be very aware of the mature sizes of the roses that you plant and that they not block the headstones or aisleways. There were many roses grown in old cemeteries in Texas and those survivors - often Teas and Chinas and some noisettes - are where I'd start looking for candidates. Duchesse de Brabant was one of the most commonly planted in the South and West, I understand. Marie Pavie was often planted on little girls' graves. Thomas Christopher's book "In Search of Lost Roses" tells a lot about Texas and other found roses. MIke Shoup of ARE was one of those rose rustlers - the rose rustlers are still active today although they aren't collecting so much as they are sharing and growing and tending the roses. Many of the Earthkind roses are the original found "rustled" roses. I'll be glad to share any experience that I have in tending roses in the Sacramento cemetery. Climbing roses are a bit of an issue - you need to have a support structure for them and it takes some work to keep them tidy - but we have many, often going up rebar arches, and they are a wonderful sight. as a born texan, thanks so much!! i have friends that moved to california, and they always say the miss the people the most during katrina, we used to live right off interstate 10 i mean, like a mile off i-10 and daniel had taken a back road home, cause of all the traffic, well, he came across someone stranded with several small children in the car, the wife was visibally upset, and the husband seemed at a complete loss they were lost, out of gas, scared, and hungry daniel got them some gas, and bought the kids some happy meals and he used his cell phone to help them find a hotel, which they didn't but he did find a shelter that would take them, and made sure they were on their way during rita, when it was our turn to evacuate, we went to dallas, to husbands sisters house, we were treated so kindly there when her neighbors found out we were there, they had a big party for us, which kept the kids minds off not being at home, and the fear we all had about what our future would be we even went bowling one night, and only had our "out of town" checks, well, when the manager found out we were fleeing the storm, he let us bowl for free, for as long as we wanted to i think texans are the best people! and i'm not just sayin' that thanks again for the kind words have a wonderful day tesa

I'm a firm believer in a flex/getaway room, but you have plenty of those. I agree that what this house needs is one large living area for the family to gather. If you are hoping for your children to grow up and for you to retire in this house, this plan is not the plan for a large family gathering! A couple of friends, kids, their spouses, a couple of grandkids, and that room is going to seem like a closet. (With three sons-in-law and 3 grandkids, I know of which I speak! :) ) Anyway, the back six feet of the room are dedicated to hall area, so you won't have any furniture there, and the opening to the other two walls have doors on them. This makes the family room about 13' X 15', which seems EXTREMELY small for a house this size. You will have to squeeze behind the chairs to walk into the "getting away" room and you will have to squeeze behind chairs to get out to the porch. Where else you would you put additional seating? It's a nice plan, and I like the upstairs, especially, but it doesn't seem suited to your purposes. If I were building a house to grow old in, I would want something more spacious than the study/bathroom on the first floor and certainly more closet space. Perhaps you could put more money into more square footage there, and finish out some of the rest of the house at a later time. Good luck! There's certainly a lot to be excited about in this plan. :)

thanks all. Potted them up in some decent soil and put it in the shade. In a huge deep pot. Unfortunately the garden bed they will eventually go in is non existent at the moment. Still in the process of being built. The roots were just bare and hanging on the bottom so it wasnt sustainable to let them be. Will leave them until next summer to divide as to not stress them to much. There are a number of plants in this clump. I have an unheated shed that should work for the winter.Thanks all for all the help, looking forward to getting more hostas.

Ahaha, of course you can come in! We're all gardeners after all, and love any excuse to ramble about our plants (because our spouses and other family are probably worn out on it already.)

I do agree with the young Aggie doctor's assessment. You might try ordering from a Texas-based company. I don't do much mail order so I don't have a suggestion (I'm also in Dallas), but I bet one of our Gulf Coast people will know a local company that ships out.

There is a variety called (Wonderful( that is suppose to do very well..have you checked it out?..Varieties from Israel and Iraq are thought to do well in our climates as well...Jeanne

You might try at the Gulf Coast forum too, here at GW. There are people from all over the Gulf Coastal areas on there.

My friend from GA sent me 2 little pomegranet trees a couple of years ago, and they have done very well. She is very far south in GA, and our climates, humidity, heat index are pretty near the same.

Did someone say you couldn't come here? We even have people from NJ and CA come here to this forum- before they came here to Texas to live. We welcome everybody, unless they are just mean.

Glad to see you survived the flooding. I know you got slammed in the Katina mess. We're about the same climate.
There is a dwarf that does very well here on the island. MAAS nursery should have them. I don't have their number. I think he has a website.
Call Jimbo's in Santa Fe 409-925-6933, Jim will know where to get one if he doesn't have it.
If those 2 guys can't help you let me know, I'll sneak into the neighbors yard & take cuttings of his. Or wait till they ripen & send ya the seeds, I've no idea what kind his is but it produces a ton of fruit, smaller tree, maybe 8' at the most. I grew up, like most kids, sneaking into the neigbors yard and eating their poms, persimmons and plums. The old lady down the street used to shoot pepper at us, luckily she was a very bad aim.

I'm welcome here and I'm a wierdo from CA! LOL! Seriously, I am not surprised your poms from CA didn't take here either. (We had a LOT of Poms in CA) The ones I've seen here are obviously the same plant but there are obvious differences(fruit color,leaf shape etc...). Welcome! PJ

I think the best kind is Wonderful. That or Fuyu. I don't grow either but my mom does and I remember her asking the nursery guys about them. Maybe you could look them up and see if either of those kinds actually exist!
Nice to see a Chalmation on here. I used to live in Thibodeaux and in Baton Rouge before that. Feel free to post anytime. I think we've got more traffic than the forum you 'belong' in.

This is good. It reminds me of a time in 2005 when some TEXANS treated us well. Please read the post I left above with the subject "I Can Trust TEXANS". You'll see what I mean. You people are.....

I don't have a plant to swap you, but here's a page from A&M about Pomegranates in Texas: Pomegranates. It mentions some varieties that grow well in Houston and some in Florida, so between the two perhaps you'll find something that will do well for you, too. :)

I'm another Louisianian who like to look at the Texas forum (I live in Baton Rouge). For some reason, the LA/Miss. folks don't like to use their forum very much. I especially like the discussions about what plants can survive the high heat because we have the same problem and I've gotten some good information from the Texas forum. Thanks to y'all.
