We have a frog in our backyard pond!

Remember last fall when I was discussing installing our new backyard pond? I was so excited thinking about the plants I would put around it and in it. Well it now has plants in and around it and now we have a frog! I think it must be a bullfrog because he is so loud! I can't wait until he finds himself a girlfriend. I know we will get used to it - hopefully the neighbors get used to it too. ;-) He is beneficial to our environment and I'm glad he decided to make our pond his home.

We heard him tonight and took the flashlight out to look around the pond and we saw two reflective eyes looking back at us next to our waterfall.

My husband wasn't as thrilled because of the noise coming from this frog. He said it sounds like someone is grabbing onto his two little private parts and pulling on them each time he makes that loud croaking sound! hee-hee!

LOL! Your DH has a funny streak! I have toads that hang out in the front. BTW, the bog/pond is in the back. My toads are kind of dumb I think. PJ

I love my frogs..and was soo excited when I found a tree frog on my french doors..I love the little sticky feet. Now you need to put a frog house out there....

Each dog is different. My niece's large mixed breed wouldn't hesitate to jump in if she let him. While my Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Teddy, has absolutely no interest in swimming. I was warned that his grandmother destroyed her owner's pond on more than one occasion, but thankfully that trait wasn't hereditary. Our pond is 4,000 gallons and that was a concern to me because he's so rambunctious and I was afraid he could drown. While he likes to walk around in the pond if it's dry, he has no desire to get in with the water. He's funny because he throws his toys in the pond and watches them float around, but that's it. He'll wait for us to retrieve them. He'll scarf up what fish food floats to the edges and will take a drink out of it, but will not go farther than that. He likes watching the fish, but doesn't harm them. And he doesn't destroy plants at all. He treats it more like a big water bowl. You should measure the depth of your pond. If your dog can step out of it easily and it looks like he can, then you should be OK. If he won't stay out of it, you can either fence it or use a deterrent. I can tell you what works - a motion detector sprinkler. Scarecrow and Havahart makes them. It didn't work on the heron, but it was VERY effective on Teddy!

Hi rhke, Firstly, let me point out, it's a gravity fed system, The filter tubs are level with the pond. The water in the tubs is at the same level as the water in the pond. We did three tubs, however one big tub would work as well. You could divide it into sections with a few layers of various filter mats and or quilt batting to filter and trap the fish waste so that it does not re-enter the pond. The pumps are at the end in the last tub, the electric lines are extended outside, and plugged into an outside outlet post near the tubs. The tubs are located behind the big waterfall and covered with the rubbermade tops. here is a diagram... Here is a link that might be useful: Even more diagrams and instructions.

AAAAHHHHHHH! Native tadpoles! I never thought of that! What a great idea. To go find them in the wild is even better because their chances of survival there is slim. I have thousands in my pond each year but only a few survive, lots of things eat them including my fish and other frogs. To take a few of them would not harm anything. I have an even better idea and that would be to go find the eggs and bring them home in a large bucket of the water they came from.(eggs are easy to identify, they look like little dots floating in ribbons of snot like substance, lol sorry) That would be much better than uprooting a frog, thats still not a good idea and I think maybe even illegal. I agree with Rita, I think you could creat a habitat sutible for them however you need (for frogs) a pond, bucket,basin deep enough that it will not freeze solid, there must be space under the ice and there must be a hole in the ice to let the gasses out all winter. A fishtank air pump keeps my 600 gal pond open enough for that (in W.Michigan). I fill plant pots with batting and sink them for the frogs to burrow in for the winter. You could learn a lot from the ponding forum, but be warned....they can be brutal, I am sure if you tell them you plan on taking anything from the wild to bring to the city they will bash the heck out of you. Ask for a pics of frog and toad eggs and frogs and toads native to your area.

All you need is some nice smooth flat rocks by the side of the pond for the the frogs to survive and escape the attention of snakes and birds. On the subject of birds, they will appreciate your pond if there's not much water around. You may have to install a bird bath if you don't have one already. This can be as simple as a flat shallow pottery dish on a stump. Garden shops sell these dishes pretty cheap; the best ones are glazed as they hold water longer and are easier to clean. Good luck with your pond Tindomerel, you will get a lot of satisfaction from it. I guess you have some small fish to eat mosquito larvae (white cloud mountain minnows are good for this), some water plants and some shade to limit algae growth.

If it's really loud, it may be a toad instead of a frog. I much prefer the frog's sound than the toad's. A big frog sounds like rubbing on a balloon to me.

I agree, toads are louder and frogs do sound like that Marti. Sometimes the ones in the surrounding stock tanks sound like those diggery doos, lol

The toads in my yard hang by the dog poo. I couldn't figure out why until I saw one grab a big ole fly that had come for the poo. So now I leave a couple of piles for the toads.
We have lots of the little tree frogs. They are always jumping out of pots and scaring me. Boy are they noisy! How can something that tiny make that much noise?
I had a neighbor who used to complain about all the noise the toads and frogs made. I never told her that we had ponds. She was an unpleasant woman. Thankfully they packed their bags and went back to Boston.

Okay - my mistake. I went outside the other night to take a closer look at our frog and it turns out that it is a toad! Sly little bugger! I had to sneak closer to get a look with my flashlight and saw the bumpy skin. Then last night I was out looking for the toad again in his usual spot under the waterfall because I heard him croaking. Across from our waterfall is a small metal frog sculpture and would you believe that sitting right there beside me and behind this frog sculpture was the toad! He wasn't scared of me at all! Silly little thing! I also noticed tadpoles in the pond today just hatching out of their eggs from a string of slimy egg casing strung along one of my pond plants. It was very interesting to see them hatching, although they will probably become fish food for the goldfish who always seem to be hungry. And the saga of the frog, er, toad continues . . .

Congrats!!! I would love to see your pond as well... The toads are everywhere ..LOL I find eveidence in the garage regularly. and the bull frogs stay out by the EE's.. we also have a couple of tree frogs that seem to love the EE's and live under the handle of the hose bib...I love the sound.. I have an alarm clock that has cricket sounds.. I can't sleep without it...

My boys complain about the noise the toad makes, but I tell them he is singing them to sleep. They'll get used to it.
