powerline and trees? txu dfw

I just moved to an older home in the Arlington area and I am very new to seeing power lines that are not buried. There are two huge oaks in my backyard that need to be trimmed by an electric company. I was not living in Texas during the deregulation so now I don't know who to call to get them trimmed. I have Spark energy but TXU still owns the lines right? Also, if I do have to call TXU for tree trimming, will they bill me? How much?

I disagree with everyone here.. TXU(Oncor) does not butcher trees. Most Foremans or Supervisors ARE Arborist and have the knowledge to cut trees properly. They do come around when thta area is Due(or someone on that circuit is having arcing or power outages due to trees. The people that plant trees in the 20FT span should know better. ANd BURIED lines--- They are going to be ripping up all your landscaping to fix it and they don't have to put it back. TXU has a lot of power and it has many laws saying what they can do. They take 10ft 4inches which BTW is the MINIMUM requirements as to not BUTCHER the tree- if you complain and fight- they take the max which is 20 ft so they don't have to deal with you again for a long long time. If you threaten verbally or physically it is automatic arrest(if the Supervisor says) Most understand and will cut come slack. And many Tree trimming companies can not trim Trees in the Power line area unless certified to do so. Many people have learn the hard way- and it cost thousands of dollars for those trimmer to trim your lines- But letting you know now- After the fight-- TXU(ONcor always wins) The law that was passed along time ago stands and gives them power to no supply your electricity if they can't trim. I have seen a multitude of lawyers loose to this law. Or TXU cut power to the house(everyone on that circuit!) and the owner can do nothing- If there are no lines-- no other electric provider can come in. Its a shame that people feel that ELECTRCITY is a RIGHT and not a privilege!

Those tree trimmers work in ASURD climate and hours- and I know personally that my boyfriend(Supervisor for his crews) has worked over 30 + hours WITHOUT sleep(as well as his crews) to get trees trimmed in a STorm(ICE-Tornaodo-whatever casues trees to cause outages) TO GET peoples eletric back on-MANY times while his family is sitting at home in the dark and cold without electriciy.. You peopl do not appreciate the work these people do for you...

wait for them to come to you - at least that is the way I do it, I let them come to me. They have never charged yet.

When the power company "trims" trees, it is not done for aesthetics. They will "whack at will". If you want to take the BEST possible care of the trees, you may want to hire an arborist. There have been numerous stories of the contractors doing the trimming indiscriminately butchering trees. They are only clearing a path, not looking after the trees' or your best interest.

ltruett, I sent you an email. I'd definitely be interested in a loquat oak and a canby oak...do you think they'd do well in my alkaline soil? I put in a mexican white oak this past weekend, along with a mexican plum and a lacey oak. There are 2 bur oaks the folks we bought the place from had planted-they're about 10 feet tall, but about right under an overhead powerline. I hadn't thought about chinkapin oaks, I'll most likely put one of those in as well. Another tree I'm looking for but can't seem to locate is a Texas Hawthorne. Buggy01-The auricacias look interesting, but what I've read on them said they dislike dry heat. Regarding mesquite and acacia...I love mesquite in the right setting. We have some old growth mesquite that are gorgeous, but at my wife's ranch they are weed-like, I would guess due to historical overgrazing and lack of fires. They've choked out everything except the cactus. On our smaller property, they've taken over about 5 acres, and rather than fight them, I'm going to let them grow and try to contain them. I have no experience with acacia other than huisache, which is a beautiful tree but can take over as well. Same for retama/jerusalem thorn. I don't think water will be an issue...I run drip irrigation to all my trees and mulch heavily to stretch what water I do put out. So far this year I've planted shantung maple, shantung maple 'fire dragon', bald cypress, montezuma cypress (2), loquat, lacey oak, mexican white oak, bigtooth maple, arizona cypress 'blue pyramid', deodar cedar, kiowa pecan, pecan seedlings (2), mexican plum, peach 'john fanick' (2), fig 'alma' 'green ischia' 'celeste', pomegranate 'wonderful', orient pear, keifer pear, methley plum, hachiya persimmon, fuyu persimmon, italian stone pine, 3 different olive cultivars, and I ordered 2 'yates' american persimmons. Trees planted before we owned the property or that are naturally occurring are pecan, red oak (not sure if Texas or shumard), pines (loblolly I think), ash (texas/white I think, not sure), live oak, cedar elm, hackberry, texas persimmon, mesquite, chinaberry, spiny hackberry, and bur oak.

What...we're not supposed to be all drunk and whatnot on here? G'bye folks! +oM PS....I do get what Floral speaks of. I live in what is considered (and is) one of the northernmost states in the US. The 45th parallel-that's half-way between the equator and the N. pole-runs right through here. But if one looks at a map of Merry Old, they'll see it is much farther north. As such, sun angles in winter take on a meaning that may seem quite foreign here. For my part, I don't know a single soul who doesn't come down with at least a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder around November in these parts. Day after day of gloom, each one of those days a little shorter than the prior. Makes it easy to have a feeling for what the UK resident may experience. I didn't look at the videos but I get the sense of what's happening here. A couple thoughts: In all cases of neighborhood strife, it seems best that the parties involved talk to one another first, long before it gets to this point. I wonder if opportunities weren't lost in that regard. The other point-Leylands grow sufficiently fast that you can't say the angry, shade-hating guy shouldn't have foreseen this and went with an different property, if in fact he moved in after the plants were installed. Finally, there is a fine line in all cases where your freedom to do as you wish conflicts with someone else's freedom to live as they wish. In any and all such cases, compromise of some type is far superior, IMO, to rigidly holding your ground. Life's too short. And as much as I am a tree-lover (Anyone who follows my thousands of trees planted knows this) there are legitimate cases, and this appears to be one, where the other factors may trump the desire to leave these be. Cynthia, I'm not sure about it being popular in other states considering Metro Maples owns Fire Dragon and you can only get it in very few places beside Metro Maples in DFW area. Out of state people used to be able to order them from MM in the past but they didn't do that last winter. They recently signed a contract with huge wholesale grower last winter to grow Fire Dragon. It probably will take several years before they are out. Maden - It can be grown in full sun. The mature size may vary seedling to seedling but I suppose constricted area in the strip area may keep shantung maple from getting too large? The mature size varies from 25 to 35 feet tall and wide.

I hear ya. We have definetly had our share of those too. We learned we needed a really good realtor that worked for us to weed out the junk. It cut down a lot of our wasting time. We also asked for pictures of houses before looking at them and we also learned to just stay away from the "owner built ones" They had the weirdest layouts or shortcuts done in so many of them. There is one that looks really nice in the listing and it is nice otherwise too except for the planning of the bathrooms (hard to change on a slab). The "throne" is the first thing you see of the master bedroom. It is even visible in the pictures we were sent from the master bedroom with the door open. It is also placed 3 ft from the wall where the toilet paper is. It sits in a 5ft wide space with the tub next to it that is crammed into the corner, but stick out some into an area of completed wasted space behind the door where the toilet could have gone and the tub where the toilet is. Great design. The other bath has a nice large shower and a toilet squeezed into a 2ft wide space. They also advertise extra thick insulation so I asked if it was 2x6 exterior walls. No it is 2x4 so essentially they reduced the insulation value by cramming it in there. This was also owner built.

At this point I don't care if they whack down the whole tree. I have about 17 huge oaks on a small lot and there is just too much shade. It's great for the electricity, but it is going to be very difficult to get anything to grow--including the grass. I came from a lot with full sun and no trees to full trees and no sun. Also, from the looks of it the choke cherry is killing one of the oaks already. I've got a lot of trimming to do.

If the trees are in your yard you may have to pay for the trimming or if you want them down all the way down.
My dad had a tree trimmed and the guy let a large limb fall on the power line going from the house to the pole, dad was lucky and wasn't charged but he was told that if it happened again he would be charged to the sum of 300.00 for repairs.
As Justin said the power company does not care how the trim the trees putting many at risk for breaking limbs, plus they will look very ugly when their done.
They will not cut them a all the way down this would be your own responsibility.

Agreed, they will look butchered when the power company finishes. Recently Centerpoint Energy came out and hacked at the mature trees and shrubs in the area that are near power lines. The result is really ugly (it's right along the neighborhood thoroughfares, so I see it every day). I'm so glad those aren't my trees and shrubs (they murdered a red tip photinia that was probably 15 feet high).

They won't take the whole tree down, they will deform it & leave it.

I have a mountain cedar in my backyard that was "trimmed" by the power co. last year. Now it needs to come down because it will never recover.

Now is the time to have all of your oaks thinned out if you havent already done so. If they are near a power line, it is much better to have your tree man do the necessary trimming back than wait for the electric company to come thru. We are lucky that the company our area uses is very good, but not all are. Better safe than sorry. This also helps during storms...less mess and propensity for damage. We should keep all our trees trimmed up and back if we live in a hurricane or tornado prone area.

The power co. here sent out a letter a couple of years ago that they would be trimming the trees & they had hired a "professional arboritist". Well, the usual crew of non-english speaking guys showed up, climbed up the trees and whacked a big v in the trees!! Just like they always have in the past. At least they are hackberries & mulberries so no harm. They won't cut the pecan, even though the neighbors powerline runs right through it. BUT they will take down the lines & put them back up so you can do it. And that is free!! Only thing you'll ever get free from the power company.
After Hurricane Alicia the power company went through town and whacked the tops off most of the palm trees! Their excuse was that they might knock down the power lines after a storm! DUH! The hurricane was over & done with!! Idiots!
