How large should seedlings be before you plant them?

Well... I think I have 4 late additions to my garden. A friend of mine has 4 seedlings for a yellow tomato variety that he has no clue what they are... I told him I would take them, but they're only about 4"s tall right now. I plan on burrying 50% of the plant, almost all the way down to the first cluster of leaves... How long should I wait (if at all) or how big should I expect them to get before I plant them in the ground?

Also, when you're burrying a plant below its first set of branches, do you burry the leaves, or prune them off before sinking it in the ground?

Thanks in advance for any info, you guys have been great!!!...
