I dont think thats TMV, dont even think that happenes in our area..
Some lower leaves on a few of my plants have gotten similar symtons in the last few days.
I think it may be the cool moist weather we have been having earlier.

Good to know that it may not be TMV. I was so bummed when I saw it especially since all the plants in this bed are going gang busters and all have fruitset.

Yep. I've got leaves on the bottom of my Knin that look exactly like the second picture. Just started noticing them today. Don't thing there is anyway it could be TMV.

Leaf yellowing can indicate a shortage of various minerals.

kandm posted a link to a chart on nutrient disorders on another thread. I've attached a link to the chart at the bottom of this post.

IF anyone is even thinking TMV, and the above pictures don't show it, reconsider and think CMV which is much more probable and the symptoms of TMV and CMV are quite similar.

TMV stopped being a major pathogen for the home gardener years ago and is primarily found these days, and rarely, in large commercial greenhouses where it's transmitted manually, not by insects.

For the last 25 years ago all tobacco grown in the US has been TMV tolerant, however Turkish tobacco is not.

And there is no such thing as a variety being totally resistant to anything, and that includes TMV; I think the operative word might be it's more tolerant.

The gene for TMV tolerance is easy to breed into varieties, whether they are hybrid or OP, and so it's done.

Missingtheobvious: do u think it is a deficiency if there was just one branch on a 3 ft tall big beef plant with the yellowing and a few leaves on a 3 ft tall cherry? I have 6 other toms planted in this bed and except for branch and few leaves the rest of the toms are healthy looking?

Tammy, CMV is Cucumber Mosaic Virus and as I said above the symptoms are very similar to TMV and CMV infects tomatoes and has many more host plants.

No, your plants don't have CMV either.

I've linked below to a good diagnosis site for tomatoes and you might want to take a look.

Two important points.

First, pictures are static while disease is progressive so not always can one use pictures to make a definitive diagnosis, but I'd say most of the time you can.

Second, all such sites list almost all possible pathogens and while the common Foliage pathogens are found everywhere the systemic diseases such as TMV, CMV, Fusariun, Verticillium, etc., are not always found in all areas of the country. So you have to know what's even possible in your own area before considering a pathogen as a possibility.

I am thiunking it may be what brian and structure have which seems to just be a case of not great weather since they are in my area. I am gonna check on them in about an hour so hopfully damage isn't worse

I am also doing an experiment on some of my tomato plants this season by adding in 1/4 cup of Epsom Salts with the 2 cups of dolomite lime (for my EarthTainers). Seems to minimize the leaf yellowing between veins on those that were treated.

If you want to grow things the Raybo way, you 're going to need to build some earthtainers. On that note, I found some Pancea cages at Lowe's in Dublin for $5. I was tempted to buy all of it. These would be good for my 5 gallon, I would think, since I can't find Glamos.

Seems like you are beginning to sound like Earl's hold method ;-). Thanks for experimenting. I am always hesitant in adding dolomite lime as it raises the PH, at least on my in ground (clay) soil anyways. But then again, you are talking about tainers.

As Epsom Salts are water soluble, you could do a diluted soil drench, but at a low dose rate.

The EarthTainer eco-system is an entirely different world than growing in-ground. I just refer to the research that the EarthBox folks have done when using a (soiless) potting mix, and they have found that adding 2 cups of dolomite lime inhibits the formation of BER.

The pH in my 'Tainers is running at 6.4 on my (cheap) meter. I would think the Miracle-Gro folks would blend it to be as neutral as possible.

If you think it's a mineral deficiency, and I'm not so sure about that, often it's hard to know which one based on symptoms, then just spray the plants with either fish or seaweed emulsion and you should see an ASAP result b'c both of those preps are high in minerals and other micronutrients.

They aren't expensive and they work. I happen to like Neptune Harvest seaweed stuff if that's available to you.
