Anticipation at end of vacation - What will my garden look like?

We will be back from our 10-day vacation on Saturday, June 27. I've had some friends come over while we've been gone and water the maters, herbs, cukes, and everything else I'm growing.

Now I am getting nervous and excited - how many of you crazed tomato gardeners know the feeling? What tomatoes will be ripe, how much bigger will they be, is everything healthy, how much have all the plants grown, and most of all, are they all OK after being left out of my tender loving care for 10 days?

I know there will be at least a few ripe tomatoes (Ildi and Black Cherry for sure) and I'll see some much bigger green fruit on some of the beefsteaks.

Also, I hope my stake system held out OK. When we left, my tallest plants (Black Cherry) were mere inches from the top of the stakes, and growing at 2 inches every day. So those will be over the top, literally, and I'm hoping they took the course of sprawling across the top of the structure I built.

So I had to share that with y'all, now are there any stories like this from anyone who has gone through the same thing? Anticipation, nervousness, the first glimpse at the garden when you arrive home, and how everything had grown while you were gone.

Is it just me who feels this way? I'm guessing the answer is NO, knowing some of the people on this forum and the fact that we all share the same condition of Tomato Madness Disease (TMD).

Your on vacation and your worrying about your tomatoes, hmmm, alot of people might think there is something wrong with you. Sounds like your really obsessed with this tomato thing. This is not normal for most people. Unless you hang out on the tomato forum at Gardenweb and your like most of us. Welcome to the club of "worrying about your tomatoes while your on vacation".

We've had another cool summer. Not as bad as last year when I got maybe a dozen tomatoes (except for sungolds which produced fine) Everything I'm growing is doing fine, but we're not going to have a ton of tomato sauce for the freezer as we've had in the past. I'm still getting a couple of zuks/crooknecks and cukes per week. Not a ton, but just enough to not be overloaded, and enough to do some dehydrating/freezing. The little japanese eggplant are perfect coming in at about 2 per week, just enough for grilling. Peppers are slow but plentiful. MANY jalepenos! Not sure what to do with all those hot puppies! Artichokes are still coming in at about 2 every 2 weeks.We still have til the end of October for our summer stuff! Getting ready to plant broccoli, lettuce, radishes, greens, etc. It's hard to get the winter stuff going when the summer stuff keeps going through October! I have to sacrifice something to do a much smaller winter bed. I think it'll be the green beans, which look like they're almost done in. Nancy

The pictures seem a very nice size for me. I really like your balcony and being able to look out over the garden - the iron lattice work is very nice. I had a small patch of field corn this year that was about 18 inches tall when it was unexpectedly mowed to 3 inches by my goats. It certainly did not do it any favors, but it recovered much better than I expected. It was already planted late, so the result wasn't great ( strangely, I am feeding it to the goats - I have just now realized that they have outsmarted me once more!). To create corn hybrids it used to be common to remove tassels. I am not sure about the timing. Corn is tough! Very nice garden!

'What I did on my summer vacation'

Maryliz, You had a busy summer! I had a busy summer but it mostly consisted of getting to be with my grandchildren. It began in late May with piano and dance recitals and a birthday. Then my GS spent a week. We had gotten a boat (which was a surprise for all the grandchildren)and spent every possible minute with him on the wake board. Then my GD came for her visit of 1 1/2 weeks. We crafted, sewed, cooked and just generally had a good time together. Then my DD and GS came back and they all spent several more days. A couple weeks break and I flew up and picked up my Kansas GD & GS and my daughter and children came back and we had our summer get together of cousins. We had a 10 yr old, two 7 year olds and a 5 year old for 10 days. During that time my sister brought her three grands for 3 of those days. It was quite a fun time but this nana was tired when I flew home with the Kansas kids. It will be a little easier when they can fly by themselves. Technically, the airlines said they could this time but Papa said not yet. Now they are all in school so I won't get to see them much. We have to make the best of our time. I didn't get a lot of things done but we sure made a lot of memories!! Sally

Well I guess I really am more devoted to my tomatoes than I thought. Lol

Main thing I am looking forward to is the first ripe fruit. Since it's Black Cherry, I can't wait.

I sure hope your friends have some ripe tomatoes already!! Otherwise, you may be disappointed that, while your plants got nice and big while you were gone, the ripe fruit somehow has gone missing!!! ;-)

Not saying you have dishonest friends...just having fun! :-)

I wouldn't be worried about the tomatoes, rather, for me, I'd be worried about all the suckers. ;)
