Hyacinth Bean Question

Does anyone know if these would pose a hazard to my chickens? I really want to grow some but don't want to hurt my girls!

They are edible so shouldn't be a problem.

Funny...I was just looking them up. I actually found something about livestock...
"For livestock, it is an adequate source of much needed protein: it can be grazed in a pasture setting or as a companion crop to maize, cut as hay, or mixed with corn."
This was from an individual so I don't know of its accuracy. Hope this helps!

I am wondering the same exact question and also live in zone 7, but in NC USA. How do these 2 vines compare with each other? I intend to try Scarlet Runner Beans for the first time this year, and am an old hand at growing Hyacinth Bean each year. What is the big difference? I suppose the Scarlet Runners are edible, for one thing. Come on, let's get some answers. Perhaps the Hyacinth Beans are much more vigorous. I am guessing. The HB vines go absolutely crazy and the flower stalks are SO large and impressive! I cannot imagine any edible bean getting 20 feet long and having such large flower clusters. Perhaps that is the difference? Anyone else? It may be like comparing apples and oranges?

I still have many Castor Bean Seeds available. Hyacinth bean stock is pretty much gone by now. Although the seeds are large (and seriously toxic I've read) a dozen or more can be sent for one stamp, if anyone wants them just send me a SASE and I'll mail some out. I have gotten a really nice selection of seeds from my previous trades. I am still interested in starting a butterfly garden though. Happy Holiday season to all.

Runner beans will rot if too wet. I sow them indoors in April or outdoors in late May and water only sparingly. Do not presoak as they risk rotting. Don't winter sow. They need warmth. If you can get them started it may be possible to get a crop as they grow very fast in warm conditions. Mine started cropping about three weeks ago and it's been about 60f here. No way has the soil been 65 - 70! You could also consult the legumophiles on the Bean, pea and legume forum.

Castor beans need warmth to germinate. I soaked mine last year for only 6 hours them put 3" deep them in pots in full sun in late May to germinate. I planted 12 seeds and 10 sprouted. When they had true leaves I planted them out. This year I have tons of seeds I saved from last year and look forward to planting them again. Kris

Thanks for letting us know that Marti, I have some in pots I'll move to a more protected spot. I had a bunny investigating my porch today. Thank goodness there is a lot of forage for them this year due to the rains, so far they've left my garden alone.

I found some seed on eBay. Hubby and I are going to try to create an arbor over the gate that goes out to the vegetable garden. Wish us luck!
